COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The Colorado State softball program opens non-conference play on the 2013 season this week, and though their Mountain West schedule does not begin until March 28, the improving squad is receiving high praise from the league’s head coaches, who selected the Rams to finish second in the preseason poll released Tuesday afternoon.
Colorado State finished the 2012 season with a 29-22 record, tying for second place in MW play with an 8-4 mark. The Rams, under head coach Jen Fisher, return nine starters among 14 letterwinners in 2013.
Highlighting this year’s roster are senior Kacie McCarthy, the 2012 MW Pitcher of the Year, and fellow all-conference performers Chelsea Biglow (Jr., 3B), Ashlie Ortega (Jr., SS) and Emily Pohl (Jr., C).
The Rams are picked to finish second behind defending MW champion, San Diego State who garnered 5-of-7 first-place votes.
Conference newcomer Fresno State finished third in the voting behind the Rams and ahead of Boise State, New Mexico, UNLV and Nevada, which finished fourth through seventh, respectively.
The Rams begin the 2013 schedule Thursday against former Mountain West foe BYU at the Red Desert Classic in St. George Utah.
The Rams will host two home tournaments in 2013 – the Colorado State Classic (March 1-3) and the Colorado State Spring Tournament (March 22-24). Conference play begins March 28 with a three-game series against the UNLV Rebels. The Rams’ will also host home conference series against Fresno State (April 19-21) and San Diego State (May 3-5).
