Recap: CSU drops second game of series against Fresno State, 7-2

May 12, 2017

Box Score

FORT COLLINS, Colo. – The Fresno State Bulldogs jumped out to an early lead and the Colorado State Rams were unable to mount a full comeback, falling 7-2 in the second game of the series at Ram Field on Friday.

CSU (28-21, 9-14 MW) was unable to repeat its winning performance from Thursday, while Fresno State (33-21, 13-9) rebounded with the same starting pitcher, Kamalani Dung, throwing her eighth complete game in a row.

The Bulldogs jumped out to a 5-0 lead through two innings, including a two-run home run by Morgan Howe in the opening frame.

CSU faced a 6-0 deficit going into the sixth inning, but got a pair of runs back. Amber Nelson led off the bottom half with a double, then advanced to third after a single up the middle by Hannah McCorkhill. Lauren Buchanan then knocked a double of her own, this time down the right field line to drive in Nelson. Pinch runner Kirsten Kauk scored in the next at bat on a ground out, but the CSU scoring threat would end shortly after.

Fresno State added an insurance run in the top of the seventh, and CSU would go down in order in the bottom half to seal the win for the visitors.

The Rams looked to answer the Bulldogs’ two-run first inning, with Madison Kilcrease and Amber Nelson reaching with two outs to give CSU runners on the corners. That’s all the Rams would get in the frame, however, leaving both stranded on the basepaths.

Haley Hutton tripled to left center with one out in the fifth inning, but again, the Rams were unable to produce a run with a runner left a third base.

NOTES…
- Haley Hutton’s triple was the 250th hit in the career of the star shortstop. She is one of only two Rams to reach the 250-hit plateau (Sarah Fredstrom, 252).
- Amber Nelson went 2-for-3 on the day, improving her batting average to .389 on the season. That batting average would be the third-best by any CSU player since 2010.
- With a win tomorrow, CSU would earn its first series win over Fresno State since 2013.

NEXT…
CSU will play Fresno State in the final regular season game for the two programs tomorrow at noon MT at Ram Field. CSU seniors Taryn Arcarese and Haley Hutton will be honored pre-game.
