SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- The Rams' pitching staff gave up the fewest runs in a single game since March 18 on Thursday, but the offense ultimately could not overcome the deficit and fell to conference rival San Diego State, 4-1, at SDSU Softball Stadium.
CSU drops to 8-41 (1-12 MWC) with the loss, while the fourth-place Aztecs improve to a 30-19 overall record (6-5 MWC). The Aztecs also sweep the season series against the Rams, 3-0, with the win.
In the third inning, sophomore Brittany Palish (one-for-three) provided the Rams' lone run and first hit with her first home run of the season, a solo shot down the left-field line. The Rams were held to five hits on the day.
Freshmen Alysa Greckel (2-for-2), Morghan Doughty and Emily Pohl collected the remaining four hits.
CSU sophomore Kelsey Jo O'Brien started her 16th game of the season in the circle and pitched 2.1 innings. O'Brien gave up two runs in the second and two in the third, all earned, to keep the Rams in the game. Freshman Desiree Laswell pitched 3.2 innings of relief and gave up just one hit and struck out two.
The Rams head next to Las Vegas, Nev., for their final two games of the season. They will take on conference rival UNLV Friday at 7 p.m. MT, and again on Saturday to complete the regular season at 2 p.m. MT. Saturday's game will be televised live on The Mtn. (Comcast channel 411, DirecTV 616). The Mtn. will replay the game on Sunday at 12 p.m. MT.
