May 11, 2017

Box Score

FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Hannah McCorkhill homered and Bridgette Hutton pitched her 13th complete game as the Colorado State Rams beat Fresno State 5-3 at Ram Field on Thursday.

CSU (28-20, 9-13 MW) jumped on Fresno State (32-21, 12-9) with three runs in the first inning. The Rams wound up scoring their five runs on only four hits.

Fresno State took a 1-0 lead into the bottom of the first inning, but CSU answered strongly. Haley Hutton walked to lead off, and then scored two batters later on a double to center field by Madison Kilcrease. Lauren Buchanan broke the 1-1 tie with a single to left field, scoring Kilcrease and Amber Nelson, who had walked and stole second base one batter earlier.

McCorkhill provided some excitement in the third inning, extending the Rams’ lead to 5-1 with a home run to left field, scoring herself and Kilcrease.

The home run by the junior proved to be the difference in the contest, as the Bulldogs put two runs on the board in the fourth inning to cut the deficit back to two.

The Rams held on from there, forcing the Bulldogs to go down in order in both the fifth and seventh innings.

STAT OF THE GAME…
12 – Hannah McCorkhill’s two-run dinger over the left field fence was her 12th home run of the season, putting her in first in the category on the team. The junior first baseman is second in the MW in homers.

NOTES…
- Hannah McCorkhill tallied two more RBI, giving her a team-high 45 on the season. She’s been raking in the RBIs lately, totaling 15 over her last nine outings.
- McCorkhill’s 12 home runs are the most by any CSU player in a season since Lauren Cusick had 20 in 2008.
- The win was CSU’s first over Fresno State since 2014.
- CSU won despite Fresno State’s Kamalani Dung taking the circle. Dung was the two-time defending MW Pitcher of the Week, and she posted 10 strikeouts against the Rams on Thursday. Still, the five runs CSU scored on her was more than her previous six outings combined.

NEXT…
CSU and Fresno State will play the next game of the series tomorrow at Ram Field at 4 p.m. MT. Fans can receive free koozies commemorating the 25th anniversary of the hit movie, A League Of Their Own.
