Junior 2B Cassy Mosser
April 28, 2013
BOISE, Idaho -- The Colorado State softball team broke its three-game losing streak, battling at Boise State for a 5-4 win. The Rams ended the series with a 1-2 record, to improve to 21-22 overall and 7-5 in Mountain West play.
The Rams and the Broncos held a scoreless tie until the top of the fourth when Colorado State was able to stake to a 1-0 lead. It all started with junior Emily Pohl hitting a double to right center before being replaced on the bases by sophomore pinch runner, Haley David. David would advance to third on a passed ball and score on a single by junior Cassy Mosser.
In the top of the fifth inning, the Rams added to their lead by posting three more runs. Freshman Taylor Hutton doubled down the left field line and posted a run off junior Ashlie Ortega's triple. Ortega scored on a double by sophomore Shae Rodriguez, and Rodriguez came home on a squeeze bunt by Mosser, pushing the Rams’ lead to 4-0.
"We were able to put pressure on their defense early and were able to square pitches up," Head Coach Jen Fisher said. "We had good teamwork as well, which is something that we've been working on really hard. The team has been disappointed with themselves, but kept coming back and working hard. Today we tweaked a few things and added extra teamwork and pregame work."
The Rams added their fifth run in the top of the sixth when Hutton reached on a bunt and scored score off Biglow's single through the right side. The run would be much needed as Boise State would rally to add four runs (three earned) over the final two innings against senior starter Kacie McCarthy.
With one out and the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh, McCarthy was relieved by fellow sophomore pitcher Molly Randle. Randle would end the Broncos' rally with a fly out and an out at third to secure the Rams' 5-4 victory.
McCarthy earned the win to move to 16-10 on the season. She gave up just three hits over 6.1 innings of work, while allowing five walks and recording five strikeouts. Randle recorded her first save of the 2013 season, pithing the final two outs of the seventh inning to preserve the CSU victory.
"(Kacie) keeps coming back," Fisher said. "She had a weird blister that popped up on her finger so she was pitching the sixth and seventh inning with a band-aid on her finger. That's where she started to struggle.
“Kacie was mentally tough and for Molly to come in as she did was huge. It was neat for us to see because Kacie, the senior, symbolically passed the ball to the sophomore. Kacie was 100 percent behind and needed Molly to come in and get it done. I can't say enough about Molly's mentality this weekend; she was really solid for us.”
Next up, the Rams will take a break from Mountain West action to play a makeup game against in-state rival Northern Colorado on Wednesday at 5 p.m. MT in Greeley, Colo. The Rams will then step back into league play, hosting a three-game series against San Diego State, Friday-Sunday.
