Senior P Kacie McCarthy
April 26, 2013
BOISE, Idaho -- The Colorado State softball fell to the Boise State Broncos, 3-2 after nine innings in a standoff where no runs were scored until the eighth inning and CSU senior starter Kacie McCarthy pitched a no-hitter into the seventh.
The loss drops the Rams to 20-21 overall, and 6-4 in Mountain West play.
After battling to a scoreless tie, the game headed into extra innings where the Rams quickly gained a 2-0 advantage in the top of the eighth inning. Kendal Butterfield acted as the catalyst, singling to the pitcher before Cassy Mosser followed suit by hitting a single to right center, bringing up Chelsea Biglow who singled in Butterfield for the first run. Mosser scored on a passed ball, notching the second run of the game.
The Rams' lead would be short lived as two runs were scored in the bottom of the eighth, to push the game into a ninth frame with the score tied, 2-2
"I'm baffled why we couldn't get anything going (offensively)," Head Coach Jen Fisher said. "(Patton) pitched a good game, she's a good pitcher. We were trying to manufacture runs and get anything going that we could.
“Kendal had a great battle and got on. Cassy got on and then Chelsea had a beautiful hit while Cassy scored on a passed ball. We thought that with a two run cushion, we were going to be fine. Perhaps we got ahead of ourselves and were a little overconfident."
In the top of the ninth, the Rams were retired in order, but the Broncos rallied for the 3-2 victory.
McCarthy (15-10) dominated in the circle, but was tagged with the loss, allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits, while striking seven in the complete-game effort.
"(Kacie) did a tremendous job," Fisher said. "She pitched to that umpire's zone, but she still threw her pitches. Anytime you see a low scoring game like that, you have great pitching, but an umpire that is likely calling a wide zone for both teams. We were up against that and we used it in our favor, which was great. She saved us so many times; I know she wants to win. It’s hard to deal with so many close losses, but we'll just keep working on it and come out tomorrow."
The Rams return to the diamond tomorrow for Game 2 against the Broncos. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. MT. Gametracker live scoring (free), as well as streaking audio (free) and video (subscription) are available at BroncoSports.com.
