FORT COLLINS, Colo. – In the 2009 home finale on Sunday, Colorado State (22-22, 5-5 MWC) scored six unanswered runs against San Diego State (31-18, 8-2 MWC) to grab a 7-4 victory on Senior Appreciation Day at Ram Field. Seniors Shannon Causgrove, Kim Klabough and Michelle Reynolds were all honored in a pregame ceremony for their contributions to Colorado State softball throughout their careers.
After trailing 4-1 to the Aztecs, the Rams tied the game at 4-4 in the bottom of the fourth inning when sophomore Caitlan Stem homered to center field to plate freshman Amilia Stephens and junior Ashley Munoz. Stephens entered the game as a pinch runner for Causgrove, who walked to lead off the inning, and Munoz singled through the left side to advance Stephens to second.
Penland added two more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning when she homered to center field to plate junior Allison Majam, who walked earlier in the inning.
Colorado State added another insurance run in the bottom of the sixth inning when freshman Christine Thomsen singled through the right side to plate Stem.
Freshman Kelli Eubanks, who relieved fellow freshman Dani Chaplin after 1.2 innings, recorded a strikeout and two groundouts to end the game and secure the Rams’ 7-4 victory.
Eubanks tossed 5.1 innings, allowing one run on three hits while fanning five Aztec batters.
Stem, Thomsen and Penland each finished the game with two hits and recorded all seven RBI for Colorado State.
