COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- The Colorado State softball team dropped the final game of a three-game of a three-game weekend series vs. Fresno State, falling to the Bulldogs, 5-0 on Sunday afternoon. With the loss, the Rams, who entered the day tied for the Mountain West lead, fell to 20-20 overall, and 6-3 in league play.
"I think we have to feel good about taking two out of three, but it's always hard to lose the last game of the series because you go home feeling a little down," Head Coach Jen Fisher said. "The girls definitely have a strong desire to get back in the cage and work through things offensively.
"I think what they take away from it is that experience with top-level pitching that we're going to continue to see. The team has a game plan for this week to practice on refocusing run support and to keep hammering the defense."
"(Compton) is a good pitcher, I'm impressed with her and she's only a freshman," Fisher added. "She did a great job with our team. We struggled, she hit her spots and got ahead early, and if she got behind, she hammered the strike zone; we couldn't get anything going all day."
Senior pitcher Kailey Snyder started in the circle for the Green and Gold, allowing an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first for Fresno State after permitting two singles, a steal, and a walk. Fellow senior pitcher Kacie McCarthy relieved Snyder after the runs, striking out one batter to end the inning.
It was a pitcher's duel through three innings, the only action for the Rams being Ortega's single up the middle to break up Compton's perfect game in the fourth inning.
In the top of the fifth inning, the Bulldogs were able to score another run, to push the lead to 3-0. In the bottom of the fifth, Greckel recorded the second hit for the Rams, a single to right center, but would be thrown out in a double play to end the inning.
The game continued with a scoreless sixth but in the top of the seventh Fresno State scored two more runs before retiring the Rams in order to end the game.
Snyder was tagged with the loss, allowing two runs and two hits over 0.2 innings of work. McCarthy pitched 6.1 innings in relief, allowing ten hits, three runs, and one walk while striking out four. Despite the shutout, the Rams defense acted acutely, notching two double plays, one in the third and another in the fourth.
"Kacie gave up some hits and early on, nothing was that hard," Fisher said. "It wasn't until the seventh when she got into some trouble. We also did a pretty good job with some double plays, I was very proud of the team. Chelsea had a very nice double play and there was a four-six-three double play between Cassy, Ashlie and Greckel. We did a good job behind Kacie, but that team had gotten to where they had seen too much of her."
The Rams will continue Mountain West action this week, traveling to Boise, Idaho, for a three-game series at Dona Larsen Park against the Boise State Broncos. The first game of the series is scheduled for Friday at 3 p.m. MT.
