SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The Rams will have to wait until 2013 to go for a win against Mountain West rival San Diego State, as they finished the weekend on the losing end of a three-game sweep at the hands of the defending MW champions. CSU was held to five hits and one run on Sunday, resulting in a 4-1 loss at San Diego State Softball Stadium.
CSU finished the day with a 19-21 overall record and an 0-3 record in the MW after the opening weekend of conference play. The loss on Sunday also extends the Rams’ current losing streak to three games. With the sweep, the Aztecs improved to 21-19 (3-0 MW).
Freshman Taylor Hutton represented the Rams’ one and only run, which came in the second inning. After being brought in as a pinch runner, sophomore Kendal Butterfield finished her at-bat with a single to right. Hutton advanced to second, advanced to third on a fielding error by the SDSU right fielder and scored, unearned, on the play.
The Aztecs tied it up with an RBI double in the bottom of the frame, but would go on the break the game open in the sixth. SDSU loaded the bases with two outs, bringing freshman Kayla Jordan to the plate. Jordan tripled to right-center to score all three runners and seal the season sweep. CSU junior
Kacie McCarthy, who took the 4-3 loss in Game 1 of Saturday’s doubleheader, went the distance for the 12th time this season but received her seventh losing decision of 2012. SDSU starter Rebecca Arbino also pitched a complete game, giving up five hits to McCarthy’s eight.
The Rams will be back in action on Monday, this time at home, against Portland State for the first of two remaining non-conference matchups. First pitch at Ram Field is scheduled for 1 p.m. MT. Admission to all CSU softball games is free of charge.
