Final Stats

HONOLULU, Hawaii - The Cal Bears (27-9), ranked 25th in the country by USA Softball, halted CSU scoring threats in the tops of second and fourth innings and added four runs of their own in the bottom of the fourth inning to defeat the Rams softball team (14-9), 5-0, at the Bank of Hawaii Invitational hosted by the University of Hawaii.

The Bears scored the eventual winning run in the bottom of the first inning when Gina Leomiti singled up the middle to score Valerie Arioto, who walked to lead off the inning.  Junior pitcher Kim Klabough (4-6), settled in, allowing just one hit each in the second and third innings to quiet the Bears' offense.

The Rams threatened in the top of the second inning when senior Cayte Billman recorded a one-out single, followed by a walk from sophomore Kayla Kreutzman.  Sophomore Sarah Sullivan walked to load the bases with two outs, but senior Lauren Cusick was called out on strikes to end the Rams' rally.

The Rams threatened again in the top of the fourth inning.  With one out, Kreutzman singled to center field and advanced to second on a wild pitch.  After a walk by Robyn Mask, Kreutzman advanced to third on a fielder's choice by Sullivan, but Cusick was unable to score Kreutzman, popping out to second base.

Cal blew the game open with a two-out rally in the bottom of the fourth, scoring four runs to put the game out of reach.

Klabough allowed five earned runs on seven hits while striking out two batters in 4.0 innings pitched.  Sophomore hurler Rebecca Penland shut down the Bears' offense, allowing no hits and striking out one in 2.0 innings of relief work.

Kreutzman was the only Ram to record multiple hits, going 2-for-2 with a walk in the game.  Billman and Sullivan accounted for the Rams' other two hits.

The Rams continue action late Wednesday night from Hawaii, facing off against host Hawaii beginning at 10 p.m. MT.
