Recap: Rams drop rubber game to Boise State, 8-5

March 18, 2017

Box Score

BOISE, Idaho – Amber Nelson and Taryn Arcarese each homered, and the Rams overcame a 4-1 deficit to take a lead in the fifth inning, but the Boise State Broncos rebounded and went on to win 8-5 in the third game of the series in Boise on Saturday afternoon.

Five fielding errors spoiled the Rams (13-9, 1-2 MW) rally, as all eight Boise State (19-6, 2-1) runs were unearned.

The Broncos led 4-0 after two innings. Nelson sliced that lead in half in the top of the third, homering to left field to cut the score to 4-2.

Arcarese then led off the following inning with a solo home run to put the Rams within 1, 4-3. The CSU rally was not over. The Rams loaded the bases in the top of the fifth and scored twice. Lauren Buchanan tallied an RBI single to drive in Haley Hutton, and then Hannah McCorkhill scored on a fielder’s choice to give the Rams a 5-4 lead, its first advantage of the game.

Boise State came right back in the bottom of the fifth, taking advantage of three CSU errors in the inning to score four runs and take a commanding 8-5 lead. The Broncos maintained the three-run lead over the final two innings to seal the victory and the series win.

IN THEIR WORDS…
“Our mentality was good. We just had lapses. We are playing loose, which I like as we begin conference play, but we need to clean up on defense. We also need to be able to execute in all areas of our game and get everyone firing on all cylinders.” – Head Coach Jen Fisher on the team’s execution on Saturday

“We’re showing the ability to come back in games, and each time you do that you prove to yourself that you can do it. That helps you stay confident in games, and makes you believe you’re never out of it.” – Fisher on the team’s ability to rally, including taking a 5-4 lead on Saturday after trailing 4-1

STAT OF THE GAME…
8Amber Nelson hit her eighth home run of the season on Saturday. Nelson has now matched the team-high in homers from last season – Kristina Akiona had 8 in 46 games, Nelson has the same number in just 22 contests.

NOTES…
- Amber Nelson extended her reached base streak to 22 games (every game this season).
- Taryn Arcarese’s fourth-inning, leadoff home run was her first of 2017.
- While all eight of Boise State’s runs were unearned, all five of CSU’s were earned. Nelson had 2 RBI, while Arcarese, Lauren Buchanan and Corina Gamboa all had 1 each.
