SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The Colorado State softball team split two games on the second day of action at the San Diego Classic II, opening the day with a 2-0 win over the UMass Minutewomen, before falling in extra innings in an evening matchup with the Miami (OH) RedHawks.

With the split, Colorado State moves to 11-14 overall, and 2-2 in the San Diego Classic II, with one game left against Seton Hall. First pitch between the Rams and the Pirates is set for 10 a.m. MT/9 a.m. PT on Sunday.

Game 1: Colorado State 2, UMass 0
For the second straight day, senior pitcher Kacie McCarthy, and sophomore designated player Danielle Wikre lifted the Rams to 2-0 shutout victory.

McCarthy (8-6) allowed just four hits and one walk, while striking out five in notching her third consecutive complete-game shutout victory.  McCarthy has not allowed a run in 20.1 innings, blanking Northern Colorado, Fairfield, and now UMass during that run.

Wikre, who homered in yesterday’s 2-0 win over Fairfield, came through for the Rams with another solo shot to left center in the bottom of the second inning. Junior second baseman Cassy Mosser scored the Rams’ second run in the bottom of the fifth, reaching base and scoring on a pair of UMass errors in the frame.

Game 2: Colorado State 2, Miami (OH) 3 (8 innings)
In Colorado State’s second game of the day, vs. Miami (OH), the Rams and RedHawks battled to a 1-1 tie through regulation, needing extra innings to decide the game’s outcome.

After falling behind 1-0, the Rams tied the game in the top of the sixth inning when junior catcher Emily Pohl doubled in sophomore outfielder Shae Rodriguez, who reached base on a triple down the right-field line.

With junior outfielder Kendal Butterfield placed on second to begin the extra frame, Pohl gave the Rams a 2-1 lead, with an RBI single to right field that scored Butterfield.

But the RedHawks rallied with two outs in the bottom of the eighth, scoring two runs to come away with the 3-2 victory.

Senior pitcher Kailey Snyder (0-3) suffered the loss for the Rams, pitching the complete game and allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits, while striking out eight batters.
