FRESNO, Calif. – Building off of Friday’s momentum, Colorado State remained undefeated on the weekend, picking up victories over Saint Mary’s and New Mexico State on Saturday. The pair of wins improved CSU’s record to 4-0 in the Fresno State Classic and 14-5 overall on the season. The four-game win streak also ties a season best.
"It's been a solid weekend so far in a lot of ways," Head Coach Jen Fisher said. "Not just on the field, but off of it, too. There's a lot of great energy coming from the dugout; these kids are really pulling for each other. They want everyone to do well, top to bottom, and I think that's making us successful."
Colorado State 5, Saint Mary’s 2
The Gaels (9-15) took an early lead, getting on the board in the top of the first, but CSU responded with three runs in the third.
Freshman Haley Hutton led off the inning by reaching on an error. She advanced to third, and one batter later, junior outfielder Shae Rodriguez brought her in with a single to right field. With one out and on Rodriguez on base, junior Danielle Wikre hit her fourth home run of the season, giving the Rams a 3-1 advantage.
After Saint Mary’s cut the score to 3-2 in the fifth, the Rams gained a couple of unearned insurance runs in the sixth.
It was a team effort in the circle. Junior Following the first-inning run, Molly Randle locked in and shut down the Gaels. She recorded her third victory of the season, pitching four-plus innings and striking out three while allowing two earned runs. Freshman Larisa Petakoff tossed the final three frames, allowing just two batters to reach base and earning her first career save.
"Molly is a good leader," Fisher said. "She has a lot of confidence and brings that energy to the mound and the team. Larisa had her off-speed working well, and she fielded very well."
On offense, Hutton and senior Ashlie Ortega each reached base twice, while Rodriguez and Wikre drove in runs. Hutton also scored two runs for the Rams.
Colorado State 6, New Mexico State 2
CSU got on top first, scoring a first-inning run on a Manzanares single, but the Aggies (17-12) retaliated in the bottom half of the frame, scoring twice.
The Rams would trail until the fourth, when their bats exploded for five runs on five hits. Senior Chelsea Biglow led off the inning with a home run to left field. The Rams would then load the bases with singles form Alysa Greckel and Hutton and a walk by Rodriguez. Senior Chelsea O’Connor gave the Rams the lead with a two-run single. Four pitches later, Wikre cleared the bases with a two-run blast – her second of the day.
Eight players recorded hits, including a trio of Rams with two apiece. Wikre again drove in two runs, helping CSU to its fourth-straight win.
"Wikre had a towering home run," Fisher said. "We had a 5-4-3 double play to end the game, Biglow had a home run, we knocked their pitcher out of the game, Shae had a bunt single, Jaelyn and Greckel had doubles . . . Everybody's been hitting the ball and doing well."
On the rubber, Holly Reinke tossed her sixth complete game of the season and picked up her seventh win. She struck out six and allowed just two earned runs over 31 batters faced.
"Reinke really battles," Fisher said. "She is being tough on the mound, and having run support allows her to be more aggressive. She really appreciates that. Holly definitely has been attacking the zone and doing a nice job for us."
The Fresno State Classic concludes Sunday. CSU will play Ohio State of the Big Ten at 10 a.m. MT. The game can be streamed for free through the Mountain West Network.
