AUSTIN, Texas – After a disappointing eight-win season last year, the Rams’ 2012 campaign got off to a promising start at the Texas Classic on Friday as they defeated Texas-San Antonio, 10-2, and kept up the offense in a 13-10 loss to Cal State Fullerton at Red and Charline McCombs Field.
CSU ends its first day of 2012 competition with a 1-1 record. Despite losing an 8-0 lead in the second game, Head Coach Jen Fisher was pleased with the overall team effort.
“We obviously had a really strong offensive performance,” Fisher said. “Everybody just felt like we were very aggressive and we did a really nice job on offense. The pitchers held us in the game; we’ve just got to play better defense.”
In Game 1, the Rams got the scoring started early when sophomore Ashlie Ortega scored on a wild pitch in the first inning. Sophomore Emily Pohl followed up with an RBI single to center. Pohl and sophomore Chelsea Biglow each hit RBI doubles in the second to increase the Rams’ lead to 6-0.
CSU sealed the eight-run lead in the fourth inning with an RBI groundout, two RBI singles and a run on an error to end the game in five innings.
Senior pitcher Kelli Eubanks took the mound and gave up two runs in the first, one unearned. The start marked Eubanks’ first since last season, when she started just three games due to an elbow injury. Eubanks gave up four hits over five innings and struck out three.
“[With Eubanks] it obviously helped that we had that eight-run lead, so she could basically throw a complete game because it was only five innings and she was very efficient,” Fisher said.
CSU headed back to the diamond an hour later to take on Cal State Fullerton for Game 2 and jumped out to an early lead with an eight-run second inning.
With a 3-0 lead, Roberts doubled to center to bring in two, followed by a two-run double from Ortega. Biglow came to the plate next and hit the team’s first home run of the season, a two-run shot to left field.
“Chelsea was tagging it all day,” Fisher said. “She looked really good. A lot of people were hitting it hard, hitting it in the gap. We ran the bases well and hit the ball hard.”
The Rams added two more runs in the fourth, but the Titans overcame the deficit and scored five runs in the final inning to secure a 13-10 victory over CSU. Sophomore pitcher Kali Haas received the loss after relieving junior starter Kacie McCarthy in the fifth inning.
CSU’s next opponent will be No. 18/19 Texas. The Rams faced Texas in Austin twice last season and fell to the Longhorns in both contests by scores of 12-4 and 8-0, respectively. With last year’s experience, Fisher is looking to have the team simply focus on playing well.
“We don’t really necessarily worry about who we’re playing, but we try to play our best ball,” Fisher said. “One pitch at a time, one at-bat at a time. It’s a great opportunity to face somebody like Texas this early in the year and get the younger kids some experience. We’ve got to try not to worry about what the name on the other jersey is, but always try to play our best.”
The Rams will take on the Longhorns at 12 p.m. MT on Saturday, followed by an opponent to be determined by a round-robin format. The game against Texas will be broadcast on the Longhorn Network, as well as live on Texas’ all-access page.
