FORT COLLINS, Colo. – In its first and only tune-up before the regular season, Colorado State put forth a dominating performance en route to a 7-0 home exhibition victory over Colorado Mesa on Saturday afternoon.
The Rams were led on the day by two goals apiece from senior defender Catherine Ruder and freshman midfielder Janelle Stone. Sophomore midfielder Jacqueline Rigali and freshmen midfielders Ally Serra and Gianna Marconi also found the back of the net.
Colorado State got off to a quick start when Ruder found herself behind the defense in the 13th minute after a penetrating pass from junior Gianna Bertana. Ruder calmly placed the ball past the goalie to give CSU an early 1-0 lead which it would take into halftime.
Coming out of the intermission, the Rams continued to pour on the pressure piling on six goals in the 45-minute period. Ruder started things off once again in the second half with a goal assisted from freshman midfielder Maddi Rodriguez in the 53rd minute.
Just one minute later, Rodriguez again was part of the action assisting on Stone’s first goal of the afternoon.
The Rams’ fourth goal of the afternoon came on an unassisted effort from Stone in the 64th minute. Once again, Colorado State was quick to strike again, notching its fifth goal of the day one minute later from Serra, assisted on the goal by Stone. Colorado State’s last two goals also came in quick succession with Rigali finding the back of the net in the 85th minute and Marconi sliding it past the goalie in the 88th minute.
Not to be outdone by its offense, Colorado State's defense was equally impressive in the 7-0 victory as the team didn't allow a single shot the entire match. The Rams will open up the season on Aug. 22 with a trip down to Boulder for a rivalry game against Colorado, which will also be part of the Colorado Cup. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. MT.
