Women's Golf Release: Rams travel to Hawai'i for first time since 2010

Oct. 27, 2013

Next on the tee...
The Colorado State women's golf team travels to O'ahu, Hawai'i for the Rainbow Wahine Invitational on Oct. 29-31. This will mark the first time the Rams have traveled to Hawai'i since March of 2010 as CSU finished 7th in the Dr. Donnis Thompson Invitational.

Rainbow Wahine Invitational format...
The eight team field (BYU, CSU, Grand Canyon, Hawai'i, New Mexico State, Northern Arizona, Sacramento State and Utah Valley) will be participating in a 54-hole, three day tournament, played on the par 72, 6,228-yard Leilehua Golf Course in Schofield Barracks, O'ahu. Beginning on Tuesday at 8:30 a.m. HT (12:30 p.m. MT), the teams will play 18 holes a day in a shotgun start with the final 18 holes on Thursday. The lowest four individual scores will determine the team scores for each round.

Returning Rams...
Colorado State returns one of their most experienced group of players in many years. The 2013-14 roster is made up of four seniors (Emily Roering, Christina Spinzig, Sarah Roering and Betsy Kelly), one junior (Jessa LaBarbera) and a pair of sophomores (Mikayla Tatman and Haley King) with collegiate playing experience.  New to the CSU women's golf program is Elisabeth Rau, from Irving, Texas, and Yesong Han out of Yuma, Ariz.

Last Round...
At the Wyoming Cowgirl Desert Intercollegiate played at The Classic Club in Palm Desert, Calif., the Rams finished 11th out of 20 teams. For the second straight tournament, the Rams were led by senior Emily Roering. Roering, who was coming off a top-20 finish at the Marilynn Smith/Sunflower Invitational, carded a six-over 222, which put her in fifth place. This was Roering's second top-5 finish of her career.

The Rams' lineup...
Senior Emily Roering leads Colorado State's lineup for the Rainbow Wahine Invitational. Betsy Kelly will play in the No. 2 spot, for the second straight tournament. Jessa LaBarbera and Christina Spinzig with compete in the Nos. 3 and 4 spots and rounding out the CSU lineup is true freshman Elisabeth Rau, from Irving, Texas. Senior Sarah Roering will be competing as an individual.

Success in the classroom...

Three of Colorado State's key performers, seniors Betsy Kelly and Christina Spinzig and sophomore Mikayla Tatman, were honored at the end of the 2012-13 season when the trio was named to the Women's Golf Coaches Association (WGCA) All-America Scholar list. Additionally, the CSU women's golf program was recognized in early June by the NCAA as part of its Academic Progress Rating (APR) Public Recognition Awards, which highlight programs that have posted multi-year APR scores in the top 10 percent for their respective sports. This is the second straight year that the CSU women's golf program has received APR Public Recognition since the NCAA began tracking data in 2004-05.

Young tabbed to lead the Rams...
On June 28, Annie Young was announced as the new Colorado State women's golf coach.

Young comes to Fort Collins after starring for the Oklahoma State Cowgirls from 2001-05 while earning a degree in marketing. She was at the helm of her alma matter for three seasons from 2008-11 and most recently, coached at Cal State Northridge in 2012.

"I am excited for the opportunity that Jack (Graham) has given me to lead the program at Colorado State," Young said. "Northern Colorado, and Fort Collins in particular, is a great golf destination, and I am really looking forward to making my mark on the program."

Young had a great deal of success on the course. In 2005, she earned first-team All-America honors and was named Big 12 Player of the Year. That success has translated into coaching, as she mentored the Cowgirls' first NCAA women's individual champion in 2010.
