FORT COLLINS, Colo. – The CSU women’s golf team opened the year by hosting the 15th annual Colonel Wollenberg Ptarmigan Ram Classic at the Ptarmigan Country Club.
After Day 1 of the two-day tournament, the Rams sit tied for 10th place out of 17 teams by shooting a 607 (+31). The team was led by junior Christina Spinzig, who concluded play on Monday in a tie for 12th individually, shooting a 147 (+3).
Rams’ interim head coach Susan Jennings saw something in Spinzig all coaches want to see in their athletes: consistency.
“She just played really steady all day,” said Jennings. “She really didn’t make too many mistakes and got it up and down when she needed to.”
After round one of the tournament, the team sat in 15th, not exactly what players and coaches had in mind.
“I think the girls were kind of anxious to get started,” said Jennings. “We kind of started off rough this morning but we improved this afternoon.”
Helping spark that turnaround was sophomore Jessa LaBarbera, who shot an 81 in the first round but bounced back by registering a 73 in the second round. Jennings believes the improvement can be accredited to learning course conditions.
“Her short game just got so much better in the second round,” said Jennings. “Her putts were a lot better. She had trouble adapting at first – the greens were really fast this morning and they were all just running their putts way by. Once they kind of adapted, we got better.”
After 36 holes, the individual leader is New Mexico’s Manon DeRoey, who shot a 137 (-7). As a team, UNM sits in second by shooting a 586 (+10).
Texas Tech is in first place going into the final round by shooting a team score of 575 (-1). Louisville, Baylor, UNLV and Nevada round out the top six teams, shooting 589, 591, 594 and 594 respectively.
Play resumes tomorrow morning with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start.
