Women's golf preview: 2014 Mountain West Championship

Next on the tee...

The Colorado State women’s golf team travels to Palm Springs, Calif. for the Mountain West Championships which begin on Thursday, April 24. At 6,324 yards in length, this will be the second longest course the Rams have played on all season, only 28 yards shorter than the Colonel Wollenberg Ptarmigan Ram Classic, hosted by CSU in September.

Mountain West Championship format...
The nine-team field will be participating in a 54-hole, three day tournament, played on the par 72, 6,324-yard Dinah Shore Course in Mission Hills Country Club in Palm Springs, Calif. beginning on Thursday at 8 a.m. MT, the teams will play 18 holes, with each player teeing off from No. 1. The second round will be played on Friday and the final round on Saturday. The second and third round will also tee off at 8 a.m. MT. The lowest four individual scores will determine the team scores for each round.

The Rams’ lineup...
At the MW Championships, senior Christina Spinzig will tee off as the Rams’ No. 1. Classmate Emily Roering and freshman Elisabeth Rau will play at the Nos. 2 and 3 spots. Junior Jessa LaBarbera and sophomore Mikayla Tatman, who is playing in her third consecutive tournament round out the CSU lineup.

Last Round...
The Colorado State women’s golf team finished the M&F Bank Rebel Intercollegiate in a tie for 16th place after carding a 54-hole total of 931 (+67). 

CSU was led throughout the tournament by senior Christina Spinzig, who shot a three-round total of 229 (+13). Spinzig moved up one spot on the individual leaderboard with her final-round score of two-over 74.

Making the biggest jump up the individual leaderboard was freshman Elisabeth Rau. The native of Irving, Texas, entered the final day of competition in a tie for 74th place but moved up nine spots over the final 36 holes to finish in a tie for 65th. Rau carded a 54-hole total of 230 (+14), just one stroke behind Spinzig

Ferguson named the best...
Former CSU women’s golfer, Stefanie Ferguson was voted the Best Instructor for Women by Colorado AvidGolfer Magazine at the beginning of the February. Ferguson was a team captain for the Rams while competing from 2005 to 2009. She is now the LPGA Lead Instructor at Green Valley Ranch Golf Academy in Denver, Colo.
