Women's golf preview: Wyoming Cowgirl Classic

Next on the tee...
The Colorado State women’s golf team travels to Chandler, Ariz., to compete in the Cowgirl Classic, hosted by the University of Wyoming, April 8-10. It marks the Rams’ fourth tournament of the spring season. It is the second-straight year that the Rams have competed in the event. CSU finished 2nd last year, behind a first-place showing by then-senior Brianna Espinoza.

The setting...
The Rams will tee off this week at the Ocotillo Golf Resort in Chandler, Ariz., which consists of a three-day, 54-hole event on a course that sprawls 6,229 yards.  The tournament opens with 18 holes on Monday with tee times beginning at 6:30 a.m. MT. The tournament wraps up with 18 holes on Wednesday, also beginning with tee times at 6:30 a.m.

The tournament field...
The 2013 Cowgirl Classic will feature 19 teams. Colorado State, No. 129 in the latest GolfWeek/Sagarin team rankings, will face off against host Wyoming (149), and trio of top-100 programs in Northern Arizona (96), Xavier (99) and Portland State (100). Also competing in the tournament are: Boise State (116), Santa Clara (120), BYU (121), Sacramento State (145), UTEP (147), Southern Utah (150), Weber State (151), Seattle (154), New Mexico (163), Montana (170), Northern Colorado (178), Eastern Washington (180), Montana State (189) and Utah Valley (192).

The Rams’ lineup...
The Rams will use their seventh lineup of the season this week at the Wyoming Cowgirl Classic. The top of the CSU lineup will have a familiar look, as Emily Roering will play the No. 1 slot for the seventh time this season, while Christina Spinzig is slotted into the No. 2 position for the fifth time in 2012-13. Mikayla Tatman will tee off as the Rams’ No. 3 golfer, her second time at the third position. Sophomore Jessa LaBarbera will see action in her fourth tournament of the year, playing at the No. 4 slot for the first time. She had previously played three tournament at the No. 5 spot in the CSU lineup. Junior Betsy Kelly rounds out the lineup as the No. 5 golfer for the Rams for the first time this year. 


 

 

Rams at the Cowgirl Classic..
The Colorado State women’s golf program has competed in the Cowgirl Classic twice prior to this year. Both appearances were top-three finishes. Last season, the Rams finished second in the 24-team tournament. In the 2009-10 season, the team finished in third place. This marks the first time in the tournamen’ts seven-year history that CSU is participating in back-to-back years. The Rams own the top individual performance in the Cowgirl Classic all-time thanks to Brianna Espinoza, who shot a tournament-record 208 (-8) to win the 2012 tournament.

Rams’ last tournament...
Colorado State had its third tournament of the spring, finishing 14th at the MountainView Collegiate. Emily Roering led the Rams as she tied for 23rd in the tournament. It is the second time in the last three outings that Roering has been the Rams’ leading individual leader. The junior played a consistent tournament, good for her fourth top-25 performance this season. Christina Spinzig finished tied for 34th in the tournament, which included a career-best round of 69. Betsy Kelly, who made her first appearance as No. 1 in the Rams lineup, finished tied for 59th. Cecilie Krefting tied for 74th and Sarah Roering finished in 80th place with a tournament score of 251. Playing as individuals, Mikayla Tatman and Jessa LaBarbera both turned in impressive performances. Tatman finished with a score of 229, which tied her for 47th and LaBarbera finished just two strokes behind at 231, tied for 54th.
