LAS VEGAS, Nev. - The Colorado State women's golf team closed its fall schedule on Tuesday, once again putting together an improved team performance during the final round of action at the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown at the Stallion Mountain Golf Club. The Rams closed the tournament in 17th place.
"I am happy with our team score today," said interim head coach Susan Jennings after the squad posted a round of 305, nine strokes better than the squad's second-round performance, and a 21-stroke improvement over Round 1. "A 305 is much closer to our team goals."
Junior Betsy Kelly continued to lead the Rams as windy conditions carried over into the final round of play. Kelly, a native of Forest Lake, Minn., recorded three birdies on the day, to card a 1-over 73 en route to a three-round total of 225 (+9) and a tie for 20th.
Classmate Emily Roering made a jump of her own in the individual standings, moving from a tie for 76th into a tie for 55th by closing her day with a 73 of her own. Roering finished with a three-round total of 234 (+18).
"Betsy had a good tournament, and finishing with a top-20 was good to see," added Jennings. "And Emily played well today, too. They figured out how to manage the wind."
Junior Sarah Roering also posted her best round of the tournament on Day 3, shooting a 78 (+6) to move up four spots into a tie for 84th overall. Senior Cecilie Krefting finished two strokes behind Roering in a tie for 86th.
Junior Christina Spinzig also bounced back with her low round of the tournament (81), finishing in a tie for 90th.
The Rams will now take a break from competition, returning to the links in the spring, beginning Feb. 24-25, at the Westbrook Spring Invitational in Peoria, Ariz.
Jennings says the break will give the Rams ample opportunity to make necessary adjustments: "This tournament tells us what we need to work on going into our offseason."
