Women's golf recap: Rams in Ninth after first round of MW Championship

PALM SPRINGS, Calif. – The Colorado State women’s golf team finished the first round of the Mountain West Championship in ninth place after shooting 311 (+23) on the Dinah Shore Course at the Mission Hills Country Club.

"We have a lot of ground to make up," said Head Coach Annie Young. "We need to come out ready to play tomorrow."

The Rams were led by junior Jessa LaBarbera. LaBarbera, who is playing in the Mountain West Championship for the second consecutive year, carded a four-over 76 and currently sits in a tie for 19th. The native of Allen, Texas is aiming for her fourth top-20 finish of the season. LaBarbera already has a team-high three top-20 finishes this season.

Senior Emily Roering is just one stroke behind LaBarbera after shooting a five-over 77 on Thursday. Roering, who shot a one-over on the front nine, was holding on to a spot in the top-15 on the individual leaderboard before bogeying three of her final five holes. Roering’s 13 pars on Thursday rank as the third-most after 18 holes.

Christina Spinzig, a senior from Evergreen, Colo., carded a 78 to put her in a tie for 30th. She is tied for the lowest average score on par 3s (2.75) after the first round.

Elisabeth Rau, who is competing in her first Mountain West Championship, shot an eight-over 80, and sophomore Mikayla Tatman shot an 83 to round out the CSU lineup.

Nationally-ranked San Diego State leads the 2014 Mountain West Championship after shooting a 293, one stroke ahead of San Josè State. New Mexico (295), Boise State (296) and Fresno State (296 ), round out the top-5.

Individually, Fresno State’s Gudrun Bjorgvinsdottir and Madchen Ly, New Mexico’s Manon Molle, San Diego State’s Emma Henrikson and San Josè State’s My Leander are tied for first after carding one-under 71s on Thursday.

Play resumes Friday at 8 a.m. MT for the second round of the 2014 Mountain West Championship. The Rams will be paired with rival Wyoming and Nevada. Fans can follow all the action on www.GolfStatResults.com.
