LITCHFIELD PARK, Ariz. - The Colorado State women's golf team wrapped up the 2011-12 season with a fifth-place finish at the Mountain West Championship at Wigwam Resort on Sunday. Senior Brianna Espinoza led the Rams finishing tied for third.
After starting the day tied for sixth, Espinoza shot a 1-under 71 to move into third. She finished the final Mountain West Championship of her career with a birdie and a 75-74-71=220 (+4). Espinoza was also named to her second consecutive all-conference team. Head Coach Angie Collier had a lot of praise for CSU's only senior.
"Bri really played well today hitting 12 fairways and 13 greens and birdying her final hole to go 1-under," said Collier. "She placed third and got named to the all-conference team. What a great finish for her, back-to-back (Cowgirl Classic and MW Championship) top-3 finishes. We are very proud of her and we will find out April 30th if she qualifies for post-season play."
If Espinoza qualifies, the NCAA Regional Championship begins on May 10th.
CSU's Christina Spinzig finished tied for 11th with a 72-76-81=229 (+13). The 11th place finish is Spinzig's career best. Betsy Kelly had another strong round and was able to move-up four spots into a tie for 13th with an 82-74-74=230 (+14). Cecilie Krefting posted an 81-82-80=243 (+27) and Sarah Roering carded an 89-84-85=258 (+42).
Sanna Nuutinen (217) of TCU took home the individual title after beating Christine Wong (217) of San Diego State in a four-hole playoff. CSU's Espinoza tied Dana Finkelstein of UNLV at 220.
TCU is the 2012 Mountain West Champion after posting a 304-299-301=904 (+40). UNLV (909) finished second and San Diego State (911) finished third.
Afterwards, Collier reflected on the tournament and what she expects from her team during the break.
"Overall, I felt like we put ourselves in good position the first two days but we just didn't finish the job," said Collier. "This group will work hard over the summer and they are determined to put this year well behind them."
