FRESNO, Calif. - The Colorado State women's golf team closed Day 1 of the Fresno State Lexus Classic in 13th place, behind juniors Emily Roering and Christina Spinzig who each sit in a tie for 28th heading into Tuesday's final round of action at Copper River Country Club.
The Rams fired a two-round team score of 621 (+45) to sit just six strokes outside the top-10 with 18 holes to play in the final regular-season tournament before the 2013 Mountain West Championships.
"We have work to do tomorrow," said Head Coach Susan Jennings. "We are six shots out, but that is our goal, to get into the top 10."
Spinzig, playing in the No. 3 spot in the Rams' lineup, fired the team's lowest round of Day 1, with a 75 (+3) in the first round. But thanks, in part, to windy conditions during the afternoon round, Spinzig lost three strokes in the second 18 to slide into a tie for 28th in the 78-player field.
"The wind blew all day, but really picked up in the afternoon," added Jennings. "We didn't hit as many greens in regulation in the afternoon round, so we had to work harder to score."
Roering matched Spinzig's first day, beginning with a 77 (+5) in Round 1, before shaving one stroke off with a Round 2 score of 76 (+4).
"Emily really hit the ball well today, but struggled a bit with her putting," said Jennings. "Christina and Jessa (LaBarbera) played pretty consistent. Both go the ball up-and-down well today."
LaBarbera's consistency translated into back-to-back rounds of 78 for the Rams' sophomore, to sit three strokes behind Spinzig and Roering in a tie for 47th.
Junior Betsy Kelly closed out the scoring in both rounds for the Rams, firing an 80 and a 79 to tie for 61st with a two-round score of 159 (+15). Senior Cecilie Krefting also competed for the Rams with scores of 86 and 85 to finish 78th with 18 holes to play.
The Rams return to the links tomorrow morning with tee times beginning as early as 8 p.m. MT. Live scoring is available at www.GolfStat.com.
