CHANDLER, Ariz. – The Colorado State women’s golf team opened play at the 2013 Wyoming Cowgirl Classic on Monday, battling windy conditions at Ocotillo Golf Resort to close out Day 1 in fourth place in the 19-team tournament.
“I am extremely proud of the girls and the way they played today,” said Head Coach Susan Jennings. “The wind caused the pace of play to be very slow which added to the already difficult conditions, but the girls fought hard and all kept really good attitudes.”
With wind gusts reported as strong as 60 miles per hour, only three players (out of 103) shot 75 or better through the first 18.
“We hit the ball really well but the high winds made scoring pretty difficult,” added Jennings. “Watching all of them play today, I really felt like we played much better than the scores showed.”
Three Rams posted top-25 finishes on Day 1, paced by junior Betsy Kelly who fired a 78 (+6) to sit in a tie for 11th. Kelly was one stroke ahead of junior Emily Roering (+7), and two strokes better than sophomore Jessa LaBarbera, who it tied for 23rd at 8-over.
Redshirt freshman Mikayla Tatman rounded out the scoring for the Rams. The Longmont, Colo., native carded an opening round of 83. She finished four strokes ahead of junior Christina Spinzig who enters Tuesday’s second round tied for 79th.
Junior Sarah Roering, competing as an individual, carded an 82 (+10) to sit in a tie for 41st.
As a team, the Rams (+32) trail first-place Boise State (+19), and second-place Northern Arizona (+26) while sitting just two strokes behind UTEP (+30) for third place.
Play resumes Tuesday morning with the Rams slated to tee off between 8:09-8:45 a.m. MT on Hole 10. CSU will be paired with Portland State and former MW foe BYU. Live scoring is available at www.GolfStat.com.
“The forecast is better for tomorrow so we are going to build on to today's play and try to move up in the standings,” added Jennings.
