OXFORD, Miss. – The Colorado State women’s golf team opened play at the M&F Bank Rebel Intercollegiate at Ole Miss Golf Course, finishing the first 18 holes in 18th place behind the play of senior Christina Spinzig.
“We left a lot of shots out there,” first-year Head Coach Annie Young said. “It’s a good golf course that you need to execute on and we didn’t do a very good job of that today. I am looking forward to seeing how we respond tomorrow.”
The tournament began an hour late due to inclement weather in Oxford, Miss., but this did not bother Spinzig who leads the Rams after carding a six-over 78 in the first round, which puts her in a tie for 62nd.
Freshman Elisabeth Rau finished one stroke behind Spinzig at seven-over. Rau, a native of Irving, Texas, led the Rams with 12 pars on Friday. She’ll enter the second round tied for 74th.
Junior Jessa LaBarbera, who carded one of CSU’s three birdies on the day, sits in a tie for 80th after shooting an 8-over 80. Senior Emily Roering and sophomore Mikayla Tatman round out CSU’s lineup carding nine-over and 11-over, respectively.
As a team, the Rams carded a first round score of 318 (+30). Georgia Regents University Augusta, which is ranked No. 32 nationally, leads the M&F Bank Rebel Intercollegiate after shooting a 286 (-2), six strokes ahead of Coastal Carolina and No. 43 East Tennessee State.
Individually, there is a five-way tie at the top of the leaderboard. GRU Augusta’s Casey Kennedy, Texas State’s Lejan Lewthwaite, Tennessee’s Hannah Pietila, Southern Mississippi’s Brandi Rodriguez and Kennesaw State’s Dulcie Sverdloff all carded two-under 70s.
This is easily the most difficult field the Rams have faced this year, going against five teams ranked in the Top-45.
Play resumes Saturday for the second round of the Rebel Intercollegiate. The Rams will tee off at 8:51 a.m. MT. More bad weather is in the forecast for Sunday, which may force the tournament to begin earlier on Saturday and for the teams to play 36 holes. CSURams.com will have updates if the schedule changes.
