FORT COLLINS, Colo. - Colorado State’s men’s and women’s basketball programs tipped off their 2013-14 seasons with Moby Madness on Thursday night in front of 1,000-plus fans at Moby Arena.
The free event featured introductions of both teams and allowed the fans to get acquainted with all of the new faces featured in both programs.
Moby Madness was kicked off with a couple of fan competitions including a game of tic-tac-toe and also a three-point shootout. After that, the real competitions began.
Senior forward Sam Martin from the women’s basketball team squared off against junior forward J.J. Avila who has transferred to the Rams men’s squad from the U.S. Naval Academy. In a tight contest, Martin edged out Avila, making 13 three-pointers in a minute compared to Avila’s 11.
Following the three-point contest, the night’s featured event, the dunk contest, began.
Holt got things started off with a reverse 360 dunk along the baseline for his second attempt which garnered a score of 39 out of 40 from the four judges. Holt’s totals for his three dunks were 105.
He would be upstaged by Hurst who got perfect scores on his first two dunks en route to a total of 111 points, good enough to take the crown. Bejarano missed his first two attempts and scored a total of 30 points.
Both the men’s and women’s teams scrimmaged for 10 minutes each to give the fans a glimpse of what to expect and get excited for heading into the season.
For the men’s scrimmage, the Green team defeated the White team 30-19. Avila led the way for the Green squad with 12 points, including the first seven of the game. Bejarano was the second leading scorer for the Green side with nine points.
Sophomore transfer John Gillon led the way for the White team with eight points while Hurst added six.
Both the men’s and women’s basketball season’s tip off on Nov. 8 with a double header against CU-Colorado Springs. The men’s squad also plays an exhibition game on Nov. 2 vs. Regis, while the women’s team has two exhibition contests on the schedule: Oct. 28 vs. the Colorado School of Mines, and Nov. 1 vs. Black Hills State.
