COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The Mountain West regular-season champions were rewarded for their performances on the court this season on Sunday, with a record six all-Mountain West honorees for 10 different awards.

Tasked with refining what has been nearly a decade of sub-par results, Head Coach Ryun Williams did just that, manufacturing the quickest one-year turnaround in program history. The Rams, who were picked to finish seventh in conference, more than doubled their win total from last season, going from 11-19 to 23-6, and produced the best record in 12 years.

Williams is only the second Colorado State women’s basketball coach to earn MW Coach of the Year honors. In 2002, Tom Collen earned the program’s first MW Coach of the Year honor after leading his team to a 12-2 conference record.

Freshman Ellen Nystrom claimed four awards of her own, the most by any player to don a Rams’ basketball uniform. She took home Co-Freshman of the Year with Boise State’s Yaiza Rodriguez, and was also named to the All-Freshman team, the All-Defensive Team and Second-Team All-Mountain West. In conference play the Lulea, Sweden, native ranks third among CSU’s scorers (11.0), leads the team on glass (7.1) and is second in assists (81).

With five players averaging above 9.5 points per game, CSU has taken an unselfish approach in its style of play, and as a result, four of the Rams’ five starters were named second-team all-MW: Sam Martin, AJ Newton, Nystrom and Gritt Ryder. While it is the first all-conference accolade for all the newcomers, it is Martin’s fourth consecutive year on the all-league squad, and CSU’s leading scorer’s (12.4) third straight year on the second team.

Freshman Elin Gustavsson was also named to the All-Freshman Team. She and teammate Nystrom were among the top five scorers and rebounders in their class all season. Gustavsson was also second on the team in rebounds per game (6.1). The two Swedes are the first-ever CSU players to make the Mountain West’s All-Freshman Team.

Colorado State’s first off the bench, Caitlin Duffy, was named Sixth Player of the Year. Averaging 8.9 points per contest, it is the sophomore’s second all-MW honor, as she earned honorable mention last season. The South Dakota native is just the second player to ever receive the coveted award, since Meghan Heimstra was honored with the accolade two years ago.
