Colorado State’s Kandy Beemer returns for her senior season in 2008-09 and will play a new role for the Rams this season, having been selected by first-year Head Coach Kristen Holt as the team captain.
Beemer, a sharpshooting guard from Bedord, Iowa, recently sat down with the Ram Basketball Report to talk about the new season.
Q: How has this year’s team improved from last season?
A: The team as a whole. We have a more positive attitude and we’ve bonded better. No cliques.
Q: What are you most excited about for this season?
A: Playing actual games and the style we play. We’re pushing the ball up the court, not walking it.
Q: How do you think the team will do with the foreigners sitting out some of the games?
A: We’ll get through it. We’ll adjust our offense while they’re out, and readjust when they can play again.
Q: You’re the team captain this year. What will you do to lead your team?
A: I’ll work on keeping the team positive through all aspects. And be more vocalized as a leader.
Q: What is a personal goal for you this season?
A: To keep shooting the ball, that’s my job and that’s what my team needs from me, also to work on my defense.
Q: You’re a senior this year, what are your plans post-graduation?
A: Go to dental school at either the University of Iowa, or UMKC. Somewhere closer to home.
Q: What’s your favorite thing to do outside basketball and school?
A: I like hiking up Horsetooth and baking.
Q: What’s your favorite thing to bake?
Q: What made you decide to come to CSU from Iowa?
A: We vacationed out here before and the first time I walked into Moby, I knew this is where I wanted to play.
Q: What’s on your game-day menu?
A: Pregame meal with the team, four hours before. Plus lots of water throughout the day.
Q: Who’s your favorite athlete?
A: I don’t have a favorite. But I did get to play with Candice Parker in an AAU game. That was a lot of fun.
Q: Do you have any special bonds with an individual teammate?
A: Carine and I got really close over the summer because we stayed here. We have the same major and some of the same classes. And we’re both very relaxed and laid back.
Q: What gets you most pumped before a game?
A: Loud music in the locker room. And warming up in front of the crowd.
Q: What do you want people to know most about you outside of basketball?
A: I’m a fighter, I look for the challenges in things. And I’m a Christian girl.
Q: What’s been your favorite memory at CSU?
A: All the small things. Hanging out with the team on our off time, dancing, just being ourselves.
