Dec. 14, 2013
HEAD COACH Ryun Williams
“Good win coming off a tough week of practice. Five days without a game, I thought you saw some rust, perhaps shooting the ball quite rusty. It’s a good win, we got to get to our bench a little bit more tonight, and that was a positive.”
(on rebounding the ball better)
“Once we settled down defensively and rebounded the ball better our best offense was getting out and running, we got some easy basket in our early offense. Obviously, if we can get stops and rebound that helps us out.”
(on the amount of three-point shots)
“I thought we took some quick threes but they were sitting in the deep gap, they were doubling in the low post. They made you settle for that 3pt shot today.”
(on Sam Martin)
“Sam has been playing really well as of late; this is three games in a row where she has been really productive. I thought she worked really hard out there and when she got the ball deep and could move quickly to the rim and not let the double get to her, she was pretty good.”
(on Gritt Ryder)
“Gritt is steady, she’s steady. She didn’t come off the floor in the second half until 1:30 left. She calms my nerves, we really trust Gritt Ryder. Good things usually happen when the ball is in her hands and defensively she was quite disruptive in the second half. She is so smart.”
“The energy level was a little bit low, lower than we needed it to be, and we talked about that before the game. I think we did have a little bit of low energy and we didn’t do everything we were supposed to at times.”
“We just talked about how we need to lock it in on defense and we did change our defense. We started to focus in more. On offense we started working it around, trying to get the ball from the top of the key. Ultimately, it was about passing, finding your best shot, and playing as a team together.”
(on creating energy for second half)
“We all come together and we’re not losing this game. We play our best when we come together, not that we play individual ball, but sometimes it gets a little individual. When we come together, get the best pass, find open layups that’s when we start scoring and playing good defense. We’re growing every single game. We’re going to start trusting each other, we’re going to start finding each other open shots and I think that’s where we’re really growing right now and continue to get better.”
(on second string)
“It’s important for the team that everyone gets a feel for the game. They came in and did a good job. Practice is good, but it’s not the same as in a game situation so it’s good for us to get used to playing with each other and it’s also good for them.”
“We need to get better at reading what our strengths are. Today, they weren’t tall so we should’ve pounded it in the inside from the beginning.”
(on Sam Martin’s performance)
“I’m running back every time Sam gets the ball because I’m pretty confident that she’s going to make it. It’s nice to have a big target in there so I rarely have turn overs passing it in to her. I trust her catching my passes and I trust her to finish so it’s really nice.”
(on defensive effort)
“We hustled more today because we had more people on the floor, including Sam. We tried to get a little bit crazier, I would say, and thank god it worked.”
(on creating energy for second half)
“I don’t know if we felt like we had more energy, but we’re a team that knows when to step up and we do it. We’ve had several close half time games and we end up winning by 15 points. We want to be a first half team, we’re going to work on that, but I never doubt it in the locker room. We know we’re going to bring it because we all want to win.”
