BOULDER, Colo. – Hampered by poor shooting, Colorado State was unable to round up the Buffaloes at the Coors Event Center Wednesday, falling 72-46.
Colorado improved to a perfect 7-0 on the year, while CSU fell to 2-5. The Rams, who shot their second-lowest field-goal percentage on the year at .286, have yet to notch a victory on the road this year.
“There were some positives tonight,” said Head Coach Ryun Williams. “We just need to get those shots to drop. It’s tough to go back on defense over and over when the shots are dropping.”
Brittany Wilson, who had previously made five three-pointers through the first six games this season, nailed three from beyond the arc. All told, the Buffaloes, who average just 3.5 treys per game, made seven, a season-high.
Colorado tallied 20 second-chance points on the night, corralling 24 offensive boards to CSU’s six. The Rams were dealt their worst rebound margin of the season, minus-33 (59-26), in favor of the Buffaloes.
Sam Martin finally snapped her cold streak from the three, burying a shot early in the second half after missing her last 12 attempts from outside the arc. She was 2-6 on the evening.
With the absence of Meghan Heimstra, who was out with a head injury, Martin was positioned in the post more often. She was able to do what she does best, hitting shots down low. The Colorado native registered 16 points on the night, a season-high.
Freshman Caitlin Duffy tallied her third game in double figures this season with a career-high and game-high 19 points. She earned the first start of her career Wednesday, joining LaDeyah Forte, Martin, Kara Spotton and Alicia Nichols for the tip.
“Sam played with some conviction tonight,” added Williams. “Duffy played really well. We were just outmatched tonight.”
The Buffaloes are the fifth team Colorado State has faced in this young season that went to the post-season last year.
The Rams have one more shot to get a victory on this road stretch at Tulsa (2-5) on Saturday. Tipoff is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. MT.
