HEAD COACH Ryun Williams
(On Toledo’s game)
“Toledo’s a very good basketball team. Well coached. I thought the start was a big key to that basketball game. I think we weren’t ready for the tempo they were running down our throats. We haven’t seen that speed. Those guards are skilled, very fast; they got it down the court quick. It took us awhile to adjust to that tempo. But I give our kids a ton of credit for fighting back. You dig yourself a 21-4 hole, down 17 early in the basketball game. I’m really proud our kids didn’t fold. They put themselves back in a position to win. We’re growing in that toughness category. They are making progress every day. Tonight showed that, unfortunately those lessons are in tough defeat. Toledo is a very good basketball team.”
(On losing early in the game)
“It takes a lot of energy. It takes a lot of mental energy as well to crawl out of that hole. We just couldn’t get over that hump for a couple of reasons. We didn’t make some plays when we had opportunities, we could have shot the ball better from the three-point line. We had some pretty good looks. I thought our bench really got us back into that basketball game. Emily Johnson, Alicia Nichols; Kara Spotton was just an animal on the glass. I think you’re seeing a basketball player grow up right in front of our eyes. That young lady is going to be a really nice player. I’m pleased with what she did off the bench. It took a lot out of us to get back in that game. We can’t be putting ourselves in that spot.”
(On Toledo’s eleven three pointers)
“We didn’t adjust quickly to them getting the ball down there. It was just one pass then three. That’s what’s discouraging. You’ve got to give them some credit. I thought we could have been better initially in our half-court defense.”
(On Toledo’s point guard)
“Their point guard plays really good. She’s really solid with the ball and a great decision maker. She runs that team. She did a nice job.”
(On going forward)
“There’s no such thing as a moral victory, but we played a very talented, well-coached basketball team tonight. We battled them. If we didn’t put ourselves in that deficit, we could have won that basketball game. Hopefully we can gain some confidence from this. I was really proud of the fight.”
(On the bench players)
“When your numbers called, you do your best to try to produce.”
(On Emily Johnson)
“It was the first time people got to see her. Emily’s going to be a good player. It was neat to see the poise in her tonight.”
