FORT COLLINS, Colo. - The Colorado State women's basketball team defeated Wichita State Sunday, 85-60, at Moby Arena. The Rams begin the season 2-0 after defeating Montana on Friday night. It is the first time since the 2003-04 season that the women's basketball team started 2-0.

The Rams were led by sophomore guard Kim Mestdagh who scored 21 points, going 7-for-10 from the field, including three from beyond the arc. Mestdagh had another great second half as she scored 16 of her 21 points after half-time and before fouling out of the game with 6:17 left.

"Kim (Mestdagh) is going to be the person the other teams lock in on every game," Head Coach Kristen Holt said. "But she always seems to score."

Wichita State came out with high pressure defense but the Rams didn't panic and worked the ball inside and got to the foul line. The Rams made 22 free throws on 35 attempts compared to the Shockers going 7-for-16 from the line.

"I thought today we had overall more scoring power," Holt said. "I think we really hurt them inside."

Getting most of the work in the post for the Rams were two sophomores Meghan Heimstra and Chatilla van Grinsven. Heimstra put up 17 points on 5-of-7 shooting while picking up nine rebounds. Van Grinsven added nine points while leading the team in rebounding with 10.

Junior guard Bonnie Barbee also contributed in a large way for the Rams as she scored 17 points, connecting on three three-pointers.

The Rams defense looked stifling as they held Wichita to 35 percent shooting from the field. In both games this season the Rams have held their opponents to under 40 percent shooting as they held Montana to 38 percent Friday night.

"I am pleased with our defense," Holt said. "They are learning to adjust in the game."

Haleigh Lankster led the Shockers in scoring with 18 points and Sheena Johnson led the team in rebounding with seven.

Colorado State's next game will come against Denver University on Wednesday night in Denver. Tip-off is set for 7 pm.
