 Head Coach Ryun Williams

(general statement)
“The kids battled. It maybe wasn’t the cleanest game, but Colorado makes you play that way; they are pretty disruptive defensively. I’m quite encouraged by the will of this team and the fact that they just kept trying to find a way.”

(on poor shooting tonight)
“I think we have some good shooters. We just had some really good looks on the wing. Sam (Martin) had some really good looks from the three-point line, and she can shoot it. I will let her shoot it 100 times a game from that spot, and we will win a lot of basketball games. AJ (Newton) had a tough night. I just think that sometimes with these big games, you are maybe a little too excited or too amped up. Tonight I think you saw some shots rim out early, where maybe we just had too much juice flowing. That percentage will surely change. You have to find other ways to score and hang in the game though, so we kept clawing defensively and clawing on the glass. We can score a variety of ways, and the fact that we attacked with dribble penetration from a number of different spots tonight, we thought we could do that and I thought our kids made themselves difficult to guard because of their driving mentality.”

(on late-game run)
“They (CU) had that 13-point lead and they made some shots, and we had some good looks that just weren’t going. We got hot; (Caitlin) Duffy sparked us with a nice drive or two and then the big three. (Eli) Gustavsson was really, really good tonight; she’s very tough to handle. We got everybody clicking and playing the way they are capable of playing. We got everybody within the flow and everybody played with some confidence when we went down by 13. We showed some courage and that is encouraging.”

(on whether this is a game that they can build on)
“The 17th ranked team just came in here and we feel like we should have beaten them, so I think we can build upon that. I don’t think our kids are satisfied. They are a pretty gritty bunch, and they will make sure to turn this into a positive and what it needs to turn into so we can get better from this.”

(on whether he is pleased with how tough is team is playing so early in the season)
“We knew our kids would compete as far as putting ourselves in a position to win the game. Last year, that game was over after three minutes. Before the game we were talking about how we really felt like we had a chance tonight, and I think that’s the growth of a basketball program.”

(general comment on end of the game rotations)
“We went with a penetration five-man lineup where we thought we could attack from all five spots. Alicia (Nichols) really helped us make that run as well. She went in for Sam (Martin), and Sam was our biggest cheerleader on the bench. So that was neat to see as well. This group came together tonight, and I think they became a real team tonight.”

Elin Gustavsson

(on overall performance)
“We played hard together, it was not individual.”

(on CU’s performance)
“I think they played really smart.”

Ellen Nystrom

(on last minutes of game)
“We still kept going, kept fighting, and taking the rebounds. That was what made us stay in the game the whole time.”

(on tough loss)
“Tomorrow we’ll go over this and realize we played a good game, but right now it sucks.”

“We could easily have won, that’s why we’re so upset.”

(on rebounding)
“The points they made were from offensive rebounds, but they were really physical and tough.”

Caitlin Duffy

(on 9-0 run)
“We kept grinding and made a couple of plays. I think that got us going and really inspired us.”

(on tough loss)
“I take full responsibility for a complete mental error. I think when it ends like that it’s really hard because we should have had it.”

“I think it’s what’s going to make us a better team because we don’t want to end games like that.”

“Especially for our seniors, I know they really deserved that and I wish we could have got it for them.”

(on overall performance)
“We’re not even playing our best basketball at all and we’re still light years ahead of where we were this time last year.”

“I don’t think we ever had the sense that we weren’t in this game.”

(on last minutes)
“They were a good team and they had a lot of threats from a lot of places. They had a lot of people step up and make their shots.”

“Sometimes it doesn’t go your way but we had a lot of people step up.”

“I wish we had another shot at them.”

“I was trying to draw a foul.”
