COLORADO STATE HEAD COACH Ryun Williams
“We could have easily lost that basketball game and I give our kids a ton of credit for hanging in there. That shooting barrage was incredible by them (UCCS). We didn’t shoot it as well but our kids were pretty resilient and kept finding a way. I’m proud of UCCS and I’m proud of our basketball team.”
(on giving up an early 20-8 lead)
“We quit making some baskets. We made some mistakes defensively. I thought we created a lot of offense for them in the first half. If you look at the stats in the first half, we had 14 more shots. We caused 12 turnovers, we out-rebounded them. All those areas are really positive and we are only up one. We gave them 10 points at the foul line and I think we gave up double-digit points in fouling a jump shooting. Kids playing hard but not smart and we have to clean that up.”
(on Ellen Nystrom)
“She’s a pretty good basketball player. This was their first college basketball game. We had four kids that stepped out on the floor, for a real game, in a CSU Rams uniform. It could have easily been the other way tonight and I thought you saw some poise. Ellen made some plays down the stretch and she is a pretty good kid on the pro-post and she’s a pretty good driver. We need to be a little better at the foul line down the stretch but we made some plays.”
(on the team’s performance down the stretch on Friday)
“I’m most proud of the fact that they did not panic; they kept trying to make plays. We settled down at the right time and that’s on them. They are the ones out there on the heat of the moment and they made plays when we put them in a position to make plays.”
(on next Tuesday’s game vs. Colorado)
“Our kids will surely compete, we know that. Our kids will be ready to compete against that competition. That is a great team coming in here, preseason No. 18 and we’ll see if we closed the gap a little bit. They got after us pretty good last year.”
FORWARD Sam Martin
“The fact that we got challenged in an overtime game right now is huge because we have all these new players. We just have to come together as a team and I think it’s good to get that experience.”
“Obviously it’s frustrating, but there are a lot of positive things that came out of it as well.” (on opponent) “Teams come here and they are ready to go, and have nothing to lose. UCCS played really well, they made a lot of shots and did a lot of good things. Luckily we were able to stop them at the end.”
(on performance going forward)
“It’s good to have a game like that at the beginning of the season. Now we know, this is what happened, what didn’t work and we can fix it for next time.”
“They were really moving and that’s pretty hard to guard. That’ll just come with practice and preparation.”
“We should’ve adjusted better, but it’s still a little early and that will come as we get further in.”
(on playing CU)
“We’re going to come out ready to go on Tuesday.”
(on confidence going forward)
“We’ve got a lot of scorers on our team and we’ve got a lot of people that can do a lot of things. That’s going to be huge for us. We’re going to get harder to guard and learn how to play better together. I think it’s definitely a big difference from last year which you can probably see.”
(on the tough win)
“A win’s a success. It was a tough real win for us, but nonetheless it’s a win.”
“We’re going to grow from this game.”
GUARD Ellen Nystrom
“We just had to go out with new energy and take the momentum in our hands.”
(on second half)
“This game, I think I was good in the post.”
