Women's basketball recap: Rams lose regular-season finale at Utah
March 6, 2010
By Danielle Marshall SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Costly turnovers at the start of the second half were the deciding factor Saturday afternoon at the Huntsman Center, as the Rams lost to Utah, 64-52, regular-season finale for both teams. Utah (19-10, 10-6) opened up the second half on a 16-2 run to eliminate the five-point first-half lead the Rams had gained in the first 20 minutes of play. Turnovers were not a deal-breaker for the Rams (13-16, 5-11) through the first half. They gave away just seven to the Utes, who scored six points off the turnovers. But the Rams could not take care of the ball after the start of the second half, losing the ball to Utah 10 more times in 8½ minutes. The Utes scored 14 points in that time span. “I can’t complain about the effort; we’re just not executing the plays,” said Head Coach Kristen Holt. “We just had a string of turnovers and we just couldn’t get it to stop.” CSU sophomore Kim Mestdagh registered her league-leading 25th double-digit game Saturday. She hit 10 points with a three-pointer in the final seconds of the first half and ended up with 18 on the afternoon. Chatilla van Grinsven and Natalie van den Adel also scored in double figures with 16 and 11 points, respectively. The Rams scored 13 points off Utah’s nine turnovers through the first half. van den Adel started her first game since the Feb. 17 contest at BYU. She shot 4-of-8 from the floor and put up 11 points.
The Rams have a short break before the Mountain West Conference championships begin in Las Vegas, Nev. Colorado State has the eighth seed and will face New Mexico in the 5 p.m. MT game on Tuesday.
