CSU HEAD COACH Ryun Williams
“Our kids were pretty locked in from the get-go, we didn’t see this coming either, but that was a nice performance by our kids.”
(on 2-3 zone)
“Going into the game we thought we were going to get good looks, and all we can do is put a confident stroke on it and try to make it. We got off to a great start, that was something we talked about is that we have to start fast and that was a great start, AJ (Newton) really got us going and (Caitlin) Duffy came in and hit some shots and Ellen (Nystrom) had a good start, so yeah it was fun being a part of a game like that, you make 19 threes and have 31 assists and everyone plays that well.”
“It was a team that was hot, won four-of-five, we went down to the wire with them at San Diego State, so I think that is why our kids were so locked in. There was so much respect for San Diego State and we know what they’re capable of. We really competed on the glass early, defensively we were really good early, and we never allowed them to get in any type of offensive flow. Not a lot of easy baskets for them in the paint. We won the paint, that was the bottom line, we won the paint and that was our No.1 goal of the day.”
“They were pretty urgent in pursuing the basketball today. I mean that one possession you saw Ellie (Gustavsson) dive into the first row and take out a few chairs and in that same possession on the other end, Emilie (Hesseldal) dives in the first row and takes down a few chairs, they played hard. You saw our kids diving on the floor for loose balls and they like to compete and that is why they are so darn fun to coach right now.”
(on crowd from last year compared to this year)
“It’s a big difference, I think the crowd has fun watching our kids, they pass well, and we had 31 assists today. Our kids feed off of that, they sense that and they want to perform well, we represent not just our team we represent CSU and our great fans, and they want to play a great style of basketball.”
CSU PLAYER QUOTES
(on overall performance)
“I felt pretty good. I knew they were going to play two-three, and that Gritt was going to be at the top while I was at the wing. It gave me the freedom to pull it.”
“The more momentum we had, the more they gave up. I felt like our energy was so much better than theirs and our confidence was up. I don’t think anyone could’ve brought us down today.”
“It feels so good to see everyone step back and hit a three.”
(on team mentality)
“How we do that is that we literally look at everyone like they’re above us. We don’t think of us as being first, we just think every team is really good, so we come out every game.”
“I haven’t been here the past couple of years, but I can hear the noise growing. I would love for it to be more people and get it how it was back in the day with the town and kids more involved. We would love for more students to come out and be in the student section.”
(on coming off the bench)
“It was really nice. That’s the good thing about our team is if someone’s having an off-night there’s always a number of players that can pick them up. I don’t think anyone had an off night tonight, but the starters were able to build that lead enough to where other players were able to get involved and get some experience. It felt good to be out there.”
“It’s amazing to see the progress we’ve made since my freshman year. Then to come in on a great team like San Diego State and beat them by that much was unbelievable. We knew they were a great team and we were confident that we could win this game, but we never thought it would be like that.”
“Since we’ve been winning, we definitely have a target on our back, but our mindset in each game will be the same; every team is good and if we don’t show up to play it will be a very tough game for us. We’re going to keep approaching it the same way.”
“I think what’s great about our crowd is that they’re finally standing up at the end of the game. We can feel that energy that they appreciate what we’re doing for them as much as we appreciate them coming to support us. You can feel it, it’s electric out there on that court when the whole Moby stands up for you and starts cheering.”
