HEAD COACH Ryun Williams
“Once again, this is fairly unexpected. Watching Utah State in our film study and seeing the weapons that they have with mainly Schlott, this is just a really good win. Utah State is a really good basketball team and we controlled for 30 minutes tonight.”
“I thought we got off to a really good start. We were organized and that’s also how we started against Fresno State, we got them out of that extended zone, and Gritt is our Peyton Manning against that thing, a lot of touchdown passes at the start for a lot of layups. Usually, the team that makes the most layups wins, and it was so important to the start of the game. I thought defensively we were really good early, we contested a lot of shots, rebounded exceptionally well and that allowed us to get out and run. We played loose, happy with how we responded after that Fresno game.”
(on Jennifer Schlott)
“We had her bottled up, I thought our kids were really locked up on how we needed to guard her and I think sometimes our length bothered her.”
(on comparison with San Jose State)
“Offensively our kids were loose, they were relaxed, they were confident, just like they were against San Jose State. But you have to be urgent for 40 minutes.”
(on first half)
“I don’t think we came out with any fear. We came out wanting to play basketball and wanting to play together. We stuck with that the entire game and it was awesome to come out like that and get ahead. I don’t think we ever let go of that, we kept pushing and kept going. I don’t think we were even looking at the score, we were just playing basketball.”
(on coming back after loss)
“We talked about having no regrets and bouncing back. We could’ve done a lot of things differently in the Fresno State game, but we didn’t let that stop us for this game. We just played basketball, played together, and we got back to how we know how to play as a team and I think that’s big for us.”
(on stopping Jennifer Schlott)
“We also played team defense and everyone guarded her. It was just hard for her to find shots in the first half and get going.”
(on 13-0 run)
“It was just about playing together. I think we had an assist for every single basket made in that 13-0 run. It was just easy stuff, finding the open man, not forcing anything, and playing really good defense had us going offensively.”
(on breaking down their defense)
“We were just moving well together. I had 14 assists, but my teammates made the baskets. It was a team effort. We ran through defense really well and came prepared to win and that’s what we did.
(on defending Jennifer Schlott)
“She’s a really good player so we put a lot of focus on her. A great player like that you can’t stop completely, but I think in the first half we did a good collective job.”
(on coming back after loss)
“After the game at Fresno (State) we just had to forget it, have a short memory, and focus on the next one. We came back today. This is the team that we are and it’s so fun to play with this team.”
