FORT COLLINS, Colo.--Colorado State's comeback bid fell short in the final seconds at Moby Arena Sunday. San Diego State defeated the Rams 48-44.
CSU (4-10, 0-1 MW) started off the game slowly, not making a basket until senior Meghan Heimstra made a lay-up with 10:21 left on the clock in the first half, with SDSU (10-5, 1-1 MW) already having 17 points on the board. After Heimstra's starting points, the Rams picked up their pace and went into half-time down 16-30.
Colorado State came out with energy in the second half of the game. Junior Alicia Nichols brought the Rams within four points of SDSU making a clutch three-pointer with 8:32 left in the game. The Aztecs and the Rams fought back and forth until the end, unable to grasp the win.
The Rams had their lowest field-goal attempts of the season with only 42 attempts.
Junior Hayley Thompson scored a season high eight points while only playing 17 minutes of the game. Thompson also tallied six rebounds and one assist.
"Hayley came in and played with some poise," Head Coach Ryun Williams commented. "She made some big shots and she played with some toughness that kind of relaxed us. Hayley is a good rebounder. She plays 17 minutes and gets six D boards; we have kids who played more minutes and didn't get half that. She's just a really intelligent, good player. I'm really pleased with how she played. If we can get her shooting the ball that consistently, she gives us that big pop kid that can be a tough matchup."
Freshman Caitlin Duffy was the team's leading scorer with 10 points, three rebounds, one assist and one block. Heimstra finished the game with eight points, four rebounds, two assists, two steals and one block.
SDSU out-rebounded Colorado State offensively 20 rebounds to nine. The Aztecs turned those 20 offensive boards into 12 points.
Colorado State's defense held SDSU's high-scorer Courtney Clements to just five points. The Rams held San Diego State to a season low scoring as a team.
"Defensively, I thought we were solid. We kept them off-balanced. (Courtney) Clements, we had her contained a little bit. (Chelsea) Hopkins had to earn her points," Williams said. "We made life difficult. We had it right where we needed to be, but to beat a good team you have to make good plays throughout the entire game."
Nichols scored five points, with three rebounds and one steal. Junior Sam Martin totaled six points, six rebounds, two blocks, and one assist. Sophomore Kara Spotton recorded seven points, four rebounds, and a steal.
Colorado State had 17 turnovers throughout the game. Off of the Rams turnovers SDSU was able to score 16 points, while CSU was unable to score any.
This was the first game CSU has lost where the opponent scored less than 50 points.
"Our coaches put in a pretty good game plan against them," Heimstra commented. "We put in some new defenses, kind of mixed it up. We focused on their two best players. We didn't want them to score 20 points or something crazy like that. It really slowed them down. By stopping them, I think it helped us a lot."
The Rams will continue conference play as they head to Colorado Springs to take on Air Force Wednesday night. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. MT.
