HEAD COACH Ryun Williams

(opening statement)

“I’ll be honest I don’t think we expected this tonight. We gave San José (State) a ton of respect from watching them on film, and obviously how well they score the basketball with the kids they can put on the floor to score the ball. A little unexpected, but I think really urgent performance by our kids. I thought the start of the game was impressive, AJ (Newton) got us off to a great start, and defensively we got a lot of stops and got out and ran early so it was a fun game for our kids and allowed us to play our bench who deserve to play.”

(on Ellen Nystrom)

“It’s the first triple-double in CSU history and that’s a really neat accomplishment. She is extremely versatile and that is how you get triple-doubles. You could see her point guard mentality where we played in the high post against their matchup, she obviously can be a really determined rebounder when she wants to put her mind to it, and then she is learning how to become a good scorer. She is capable of performing well in all of those areas and to do it all on the same night is unique and impressive.”

(on AJ Newton)

“AJ’s first half was as good of a first half we’ve had anybody play in our two years. She was very determined, her shots were great shots, and she got everybody involved, and played with a lot of confidence tonight. And AJ has been struggling with her shooting so for her to come out and play with that type of confidence and a tough mentality, I’m proud of that.”

(on seven in a row)

“Obviously we like the seven in a row, but it’s important to get one in a row at Fresno (State). Our job was to beat San José (State), we weren’t looking at the previous six games that we’ve won our focus was right on San José. We’ll come to work tomorrow and our focus will be on Fresno.”

CSU PLAYER QUOTES

AJ Newton

(on bench players)

“It was nice to see people who don’t get to play as much get in take shots and feel comfortable.”

(on playing against former team)

“I tried to be calm. It was a very personal game, but I tried to clear my mind. It felt good and my team knew how much it meant to me so that felt good that they played hard for me.”

“I did recognize a lot of them and said, ‘hi’ after the game. There’s no bad blood, but I just really wanted to beat them, and I’m happy we got to 100 points.”

(on overall feel of the game)

“That was the first time we played carefree. We didn’t have to run plays we just played motion and if you were open you got to shoot it.”

Ellen Nystrom

(on triple double)

“Nothing different, I might have been more aggressive on the rebounds, but it was fun.”

(on three-pointers)

“We can finally shoot threes.”

(on seven straight wins)

“We don’t think about that, but we just keep getting better and finding each other.”

(on overall feel of the game)

“I think we relaxed, but it was in a smart way.”

“We were just focused and just had fun.”

Elin Gustavsson

(on offense)

“It was nice to see the whole team playing well together.”

(on seven straight wins)

“We just take one game at a time.”

(on overall feel of the game)

“We just didn’t stop playing and kept going the whole game.”
