FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Former Colorado State men’s golf standout Zahkai Brown continued an eventful summer for the Rams program over the weekend, capturing the HealthOne Colorado Open Championship by an impressive five-stroke margin.
Brown, a native of Arvada, Colo., carded scores of 7-under 64 in each of his final two rounds of the tournament, to finish with a four-round total of 266 (-18) at Green Valley Ranch Golf Club in Denver, Colo.
For the second consecutive year Brown, who won two collegiate tournaments during his time at Colorado State, entered the final round of the Colorado Open with a lead. However, after falling by one stroke in the 2012 event, Brown ran away with the title this year, all but sealing the victory with a spectacular eagle on the par-4 14th hole to cap a round that included seven birdies and just two bogies.
In addition to his two collegiate wins at CSU, Brown is fourth all-time in school history with a career stroke average of 72.36 in 134 rounds as a Ram. His 45 tournaments played ranks tied for seventh in program annals. He was an All-Mountain West selection as a senior in 2012, and also garnered four academic all-conference nods during his collegiate career.
Brown’s victory continues an eventful summer for the CSU men’s golf program around the Centennial State. Current junior Cameron Harrell recently qualified for the U.S. Amateur Championship by winning a qualifying tournament July 22 at Fort Collins Country Club. Harrell also qualified for the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship with a win at Highland Meadows Golf Course in June. Senior Parker Edens finished second in the Colorado Match Play Championships on July 12 at Bear Creek Golf Club in Denver.
The entire team returns to the links in September with back-to-back tournaments in Colorado to open the season. First the Rams visit Colorado Springs for the Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational (Sept. 8-9), before returning home to Fort Collins to host the second annual Ram Master’s Invitational (Sept. 16-17) at Fort Collins Country Club.
