NORMAN, Okla. - Colorado State men's golf senior-to-be Cameron Harrell was recognized Wednesday afternoon when the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) released its annual list of Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholars. Harrell is one of 207 Division I golfers named to the list, and one of eight competitors from the Mountain West.
As a junior in 2013-14, Harrell, a native of Colorado Springs, Colo., played in all 11 tournaments for the Rams, starting the final 10 events in the No. 1 position. He placed as CSU's top finisher in six events, including each of the five tournaments played during the Rams' fall schedule. He captured his first collegiate victory - tying DU's Oskar Arvidsson for medalist honors - after carding back-to-back season-low rounds of 67 in Rounds 2 and 3 of CSU's own Ram Masters Invitational presented by Pedersen Toyota last September at Fort Collins Country Club. Overall, Harrell closed the season ranked No. 1 on the team with a stroke average of 73.53.
Harrell becomes the 16th CSU golfer all-time to earn GCAA All-America Scholar honors, and the first since former standout Zahkai Brown took home the honor in back-to-back seasons in 2010-11 and 2011-12. Scott Mendelsohn was the Rams' first such honoree during the 1997-98 season, and Robby Stephenson, in 2000-01, opened a stretch of 12 consecutive seasons for the Rams with at least one honoree, culminating in Brown's second selection in 2011-12.
To be eligible for Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholar status an individual must be a junior or senior academically, compete in at least three full years at the collegiate level, participate in 50 percent of his team's competitive rounds, have a stroke-average under 76.0 in Division I, and maintain a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.2. A recipient must also be of high moral character and be in good standing at his college or university.
