WINDSOR, Colo. – Colorado State’s Cameron Harrell qualified the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship at the Highland Meadows Golf Course Monday.
The Colorado Springs native finished in second place, behind Derek Fribbs (131), with two subpar rounds of 68 and 65 (par 71) for a two-round total of 133. He will advance to the championship in Lorton, Va., on July 15-20.
“I played pretty well in the morning, I just had a couple bad mistakes,” said Harrell. “But I put myself in a good position to have a good second round and finish in the top three to qualify. I cleaned things up really well in the afternoon round, hitting all 18 greens while shooting a bogey-free 65."
The junior beat out 64 players at Monday’s qualifier for a spot in the national round.
Laurel Hill Golf Club will host the championship. Formerly a prison, the 7,022 yard-course boasts a par 70. The correctional facility closed its doors in 2000, and the course opened five years later.
