FORT COLLINS, Colo. - Six former Colorado State men's golf standouts, including PGA Tour professional Martin Laird, 2014 graduate Parker Edens, and brothers Zen and Zahkai Brown, are slated to play in U.S. Open sectional qualifiers all across the country on Monday, with the goal of advancing to the 114th U.S. Open Championship at Pinehurst No. 2, June 12-15.
The six Rams will compete at four of the 10 sectional qualifier sites across the U.S. Each qualifier will consist of 36 holes played in a single day, with the number of spots up for grabs at each site to be determined by the quality and quantity of the field at each location.
Laird (Class of 2004), ranked 128th in the World Golf Rankings and 132nd in the FedEx Cup Rankings, will join Riley Arp (2010), a native of Fort Collins, and Zahkai Brown (2012), who hails from Arvada, Colo., in the field competing at Colonial Country Club (Results) in Memphis, Tenn. Laird, a 10-year professional from Glasgow, Scotland, is in search of his sixth career, and fourth consecutive, U.S. Open berth. He finished tied for 21st at the 2013 event.
Edens, a Greeley, Colo., native who graduated from CSU in May with a degree in communications, will tee off against the field at the Springfield Country Club in Springfield, Mo.
Zen Brown, a 2009 CSU graduate also from Arvada, Colo., will tee off at Emerald Valley Golf Course in Creswell, Ore.
Nigel Spence, the oldest player in the group, is a 2000 graduate of Colorado State. He will play at Lake Merced Golf Club/Olympic Club in Daly City, Calif., just south of San Francisco.
