MARICOPA, Ariz. – Former Colorado State standout Zen Brown, a 2007 and 2009 All-Mountain West honoree during his time with the Rams, joined CSU graduating senior Parker Edens in advancing to the Sectional Qualifying round to move one step closer to a berth in the 2014 U.S. Open Championship on Wednesday.
Brown came up just short of a Sectional bid in 2013 finishing as the top alternate at The Heritage at Westmoor in Westminster, Colo., but broke through this season, carding a 71 to tie for medalist honors and earn one of five bids up for grabs at Southern Dunes Golf Club, just outside Phoenix, Ariz.
Brown, who ranks No. 2 all-time at CSU with a career scoring average of 72.18, is also one of three golfers in program history to shoot a school-record 63 in competition. He set the mark, as a true freshman in 2005-06, which has since been matched by Dustin Morris and younger brother Zahkai Brown (twice).
Brown is the second Ram to advance to Sectionals this week. Edens, who will graduate from CSU on Saturday with a degree in communications studies, tied for medalist honors at a local qualifier held Tuesday at Collindale Golf Course. Another former Rams’ standout, Riley Arp, finished as the top alternate at Collindale.
