FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Colorado State senior Parker Edens moved one step closer to qualifying for the U.S. Open, punching his ticket to sectionals qualifier by tying for medalist honors in the local qualifier held at Collindale Golf Course on Tuesday.
Edens, who will graduate Saturday from CSU with a degree in communications, is coming off of his final season for the Rams in which he closed as the team’s top performer in four tournaments, and posted a pair of top-10 finishes.
The steady approach that the Greeley, Colo., native displayed throughout his collegiate career served him well on a brisk, windy day on the course, as Edens posted one of two sub-par rounds – a 1-under 70 (35-35) – to earn a share of the tournament victory with Cameron Brown of Edwards, Colo.
Edens and Brown, along with Matt Rutledge of Fort Collins and Miles Philpy of Thornton, Colo., earned the four spots to compete in one of 10 sectional qualifiers slated for June 2.
Fort Collins’ Riley Arp, a 2010 All-Mountain West honoree as a senior at Colorado State, finished the tournament as the top alternate with a round of even-par 71. Arp played four seasons with the Rams after graduating from Poudre High School in 2006.
Also competing in Tuesday’s local qualifier were Rams sophomore Brett Wilson (35-38—73), junior Cameron Harrell (39-35—74), incoming freshman Kyler Dunkle (40-37—77) and sophomore Dominic Kieffer (41-40—81).
