INDIANAPOLIS, In. - The NCAA Division 1 Men's Golf Committee has selected Colorado State to participate in the 2012 NCAA regional in Bowling Green, Ky., played at the Club at Olde Stone May 17-19. In the 14-team filed, the Rams hold the No. 11 seed.
The 2012 selection marked the sixth-straight regional appearance, 12 in 13 years, for Head Coach Jamie Bermel's team.
"It is a great day for CSU men's golf, CSU athletics and the entire university," said Bermel. "I'm so proud of the guys on the team, but especially the seniors and the way they played in the last three events. Mike Wuertz ties for first at Talking Stick, Zahkai Brown wins at BYU and finishes tied in 2nd at the Mountain West. For our team to do well, the seniors need to do well."
Western Kentucky will serve as host of the 54-hole tournament. The top-5 performing teams will advance to the championship along with the top individual not on those teams.
Coach Bermel commented on extending the season past Bowling Green.
"We need to play well at Regionals, but don't have to play great," said Bermel." "We don't need to win, we just need to finish in the top 5 to advance. There are a lot of highly ranked teams with great history, but at this point in the season, the key is to play well and survive another day. I know this team will be up for the challenge and couldn't be more excited for these kids and the chance to extend our season."
