Rams Earn First Victory of the Year...

The Colorado State menís golf team moved up two spots on the final day of the BYU Cougar Classic to take home top honors. The Rams put together a final round score of 286 to finish one stroke ahead of both Denver and BYU giving the team their first victory of the year. This is the second year in a row the Rams have won the Cougar Classic. CSU tied for first place last year after the final round was cancelled due to inclement weather. The tournament victory is the 15th all-time for Colorado State. The victory also marks CSUís 11th consecutive tournament this year in which they have finished in the top-10. The team finished with a three-round total score of 857, the fourth lowest three-round total in school history.

Four Players Finish in Top-20...

CSU finished with three players in the top-10 and four in the top-20 to help guide them to the victory. Martin Laird again led the way for the Rams and came through in the clutch. BYU was up on the Rams by one stroke going into the final hole, but Laird birdied to seal the deal and put the team up by one following a bogey by BYU. Laird paced the field in the tournament giving him his second victory of the spring and the third of his career, making him the only player in school history to win three tournaments. Laird fired rounds of 67, 69, and 73, respectively to finish at seven under par, two strokes ahead of the competition. Lairdís first and second rounds of 67 and 69 mark the 11th and 12th time this season Laird has finished with rounds under 70. Nolan Martin also stepped up big for the Rams. Martin carded rounds of 69, 71 and 72 respectively, to finish in a three-way tie for third place; his second best finish this year. The tournament also marks Martinís fifth top-10 finish of the year. Geoff Nuwash also played well for the Rams. Nuwash finished with a three-round total score of 216 to finish alone in eighth, his best finish of the year. Nuwash carded a final round score of 69, which is his best score of the year. Brett Tobyne was another bright spot for Colorado State. Tobyne finished in a six-way tie for 15th after recording a total score of 220. His 15th place finish marks his best this year. John Hayes rounded out the field for the Rams. Hayes finished in a tie for 52nd, with a total score of 233. Ironically enough, the last time CSU had four players finish in the top-20 was in the Cougar Classic a year ago.

Laird Ties Record...

With his victory in the Cougar Classic, Martin Laird has tied Jeff Fujimoto for the most top-10 finishes in a season with seven. Fujimoto accomplished the feat in the 1995-96 season. Laird is currently third on CSUís all-time list for career top-10 finishes, he currently has 12, the record is 16.
