First on the Tee
The Rams, having not seen play since March 5, will head to the southwest to play in the Desert Shootout in Goodyear, Ariz. at Palm Valley Golf Course, beginning on March 21. Colorado State will look to rebound from a 10th place finish at the Fresno State Lexus Classic.
Head Coach Christian Newton
believes that Arizona is a place where his team can find success.
"Arizona is very similar in climate," said Coach Newton. "You know altitude-wise, and that dry climate is very similar to what our guys are used to here in Colorado. The golf course, from what I understand, will give us a lot of chances for birdies and to get the ball close, so the team that does that the best will probably come out on top."
Senior Kirby Pettitt
, who finished with a 214 (-2) after three-rounds at the Fresno State Lexus Classic, saw his Rams' team put a lot of emphasis on one certain aspect of play in practice leading up to Thursday.
"The short game," said Pettitt. "We've done quite a bit of chipping and putting. The course is going to give us a lot of looks at birdies, so we'll need to stay patient and play our own games individually."
The par-72, 7015-yard Palm Valley Golf Course is less than 20 miles west of downtown Phoenix as well as being located in the heart of the West Valley's top sports and entertainment venues.
Colorado State (70) will square up against Air Force (116), Baylor (37), Boise State (178), BYU (42), Denver (105), Idaho (108), Illinois (19), Kansas (103), Kansas State (106), Nebraska (135), New Mexico State (144), Southern Utah (154), Tulsa (39), Wichita State (84) and Wyoming (161).
