SONOMA, Calif. – The Colorado State men’s golf team opened play at the 2013 Alister MacKenzie Invitational on Monday, finishing the first day of action in 10th place in the 16-team field behind top-20 performances through 36 holes by junior Cameron Harrell and senior Parker Edens.

The Rams closed the day with a team score of 579 (+3), just five strokes off the pace of ninth-place San Diego State, and 10 strokes out of the Top 5.

"The conditions could not have been any better for scoring,” said head coach Christian Newton. “We struggled in the first round but had a really nice second round going until a few bad holes coming in. We were very close to a good round. We will need all five guys playing well tomorrow for a good finish. This group has the potential I hope to see it."

Harrell, playing in the event for the third time in his Rams’ career, carded back-to-back rounds under par, with an opening-round of 70, followed by a 71 in Round 2.  Harrell leads the Rams, sitting in a tie for 15th at 3-under par heading into Tuesday’s final round.

“Today was a solid day overall for me,” said Harrell. “I just have to be really patient out there tomorrow and a good score will come. I've set myself up to have another good finish with a good round tomorrow. We all know we can go low tomorrow and with a good round we can really move up the leaderboard and get some quality wins over some good teams.”

Edens opened his tournament by shooting the lowest round of the day for the Rams, a 3-under 69, but slowed in the second round with a 73 (+1), to fall one stroke behind Harrell in a tie for 20th.

Junior Patrick Winther, playing in the Rams’ lineup for the first time since the season-opening tournament at the Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational, figured into the scoring for the Rams in both rounds.  Winther shot a 76 (+4) in the first round, but shaved five strokes in the afternoon to card a two-round score of 147 (+3) in a tie for 44th.

Sophomore Dominic Kieffer, and true freshman Logan Iverson are tied for 69th in the 80-player field. Iverson, making his collegiate debut, carded back-to-back rounds of 76 (+4), contributing to the Rams’ scoring in Round 1. Kieffer got off to a slow start, shooting a 79 (+7) in Round 1, before carding a 1-over 73 in Round 2.

Host California leads the field by a wide margin, firing a two-round team score of 541 (-35), 21 strokes ahead of second-place Oregon and Arizona State at 562. BYU (564) and Minnesota (569) round out the Top 5 in the team standings.

Cal also boasts the top-three individual performers. Joel Statter paces the field at 11-under, while teammates Brandon Hagy and Pace Johnson are tied for second, one stroke behind Statter.

Play resumes Tuesday morning with tee times beginning at 9:45 a.m. MT. CSU is in the last groups to tee off of Hole 10, matched with San Diego State, San Francisco and Fresno State. Live scoring is available at www.GolfStatResults.com.
