COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The Colorado State men's golf team opened up the 2013-14 season on Sunday with 36 holes at the Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational on the Eisenhower Golf Course at the U.S. Air Force Academy.

The experienced Rams, playing on a familiar course where they finished in fourth place at last year's event, had some uncharacteristic trouble around the greens on Sunday, pushing the team into a tie for 10th place heading into Monday's final round.

"We have plenty of experience on these extremely tricky greens, but just never got comfortable with the reads," said Rams' head coach Christian Newton. "I don't feel like ball striking was our problem."

The Rams carded a first-round team score of 294 (+6) and followed with a second-round team total of 296 (+8) to sit in a tie with UMKC and Northern Colorado in 10th place at 14-over par.

However, the Rams know that a strong finish can pull them back into the thick of the competition.

"Today wasn't good but it's behind us now," added Newton. "We will get a good night's rest and give it a great effort tomorrow.  We are only seven strokes out of fifth place and a good round will take care of everything."

The Rams were led on the first day by junior Cameron Harrell, a native of Colorado Springs who was a standout during his prep career at Air Academy High School. Harrell carded back-to-back rounds of even-par 72 to sit in a tie for 14th, just one stroke out of the top 10 and two strokes away from the top 5.

"Today went well for the most part," said Harrell of his performance in his hometown. "I had a lot of good shots to build on and just need to clean up some shots around the green for tomorrow's round. We need all five guys tomorrow to have a good round so we can move up the leader board and have a solid finish for the tournament."

Sophomore Dominic Kieffer carded the Rams' only sub-par round of the afternoon, opening with a 1-under 71 and tallying a 75 (+3) in Round 2 to close the first day of competition in a tie for 25th, two strokes off Harrell's pace.

Senior Parker Edens and junior transfer Patrick Winther rounded out the scoring for the Rams. Edens carded rounds of 75 (+3) and 74 (+2) to sit in a tie for 42nd. Winther, making his Rams' debut after beginning his collegiate career at Oklahoma State, carded rounds of 76 (+4) and 75 (+3). Winther enters the final round tied for 56th.

Sophomore Brett Wilson, shot back-to-back rounds of 76 to finish one stroke behind Winther in a tie for 65th in the 88-player field.

Also competing for the Rams is true freshman Alec Bone who carded a two-round score of 5-over 149 to site in a tie for 42nd.

Host Air Force stormed out to a big lead to open the competition, sitting 12 strokes ahead of second-place UTEP with a two-round score of 563 (-13). UTEP (575), New Mexico State (576), Colorado (582) and Wyoming (583) round out the top 5 through 36 holes.

Falcons' golfers also sit 1-2 on the individual leaderboard with 18 to play, as Kyle Westmoreland carded a 135 (-9) while teammate Matthew Dunn shot a 137 (-7).

The final round is slated to begin Monday morning with tee times beginning at 7:30 a.m. MT.  Live scoring is available at www.GolfStat.com.
